All i am saying is that if this person wants to study then it needs to be paid for, everyone else has to take a loan so why not the OP. I am not attacking her want to succeed her education which I commend, I just feel that this needs to be paid for some how and a student loan would be the ideal solution for her
I have a student loan and a bursary already though - it pays for my rent and nothing more. Won't even cover *that* next year!0

My rent totals £6000 a year plus £500 on essentials like a phone line, TV licence and broadband, mobile phone costs. I get £5000 a year in loans and grants. If I rely solely on loans and grants, I won't be able to eat!0

If you are only getting £5000 a year in loans, grants and bursary you are clearly not getting what is available. The maintenance loan on it's own is £4950 (outside London) and maintenance grant and any bursary are on top of that. As you already get student dla you almost certainly qualify for the special support grant which would be £2906 plus the £4950 maintenace loan plus whatever bursary your uni is doing. It's someone else's fault.0

I get it through Scottish funding though, they take away a portion of your loan and replace it with your grant. Effectively you only get £4000 in bursary, £1000 in loan. I don't think my Uni do a bursary. Never heard of the special support grant though, will look into it. DSA is just money they give to the uni basically so you don't have to buy adaptibe software and computer equipment that others wouldn't necessarily need.
Did have it checked last year by my advisor who said I was getting all I was allowed - but I think I might contact her again just to check.0

Are you in Scotland because, if you are, it would be a good idea to have mentioned it as the funding is different from England.0

My first thought is that your rent is quite high, £460 per month which doesn't cover the cost of telephone or internet. It's a long time since I paid rent but it seems very high to me, are you sure that the "friend" that you will be sharing with is not taking advantage of you ?0

Its actually in excess of that if you only take into account term time occupation!
Why not live with your mother during non term time?
I know people who live on that amount of money (yes its tight) work, commute and still have money to eat.
Seek out cheaper places to rent, look laterally and dont turn to the state as a first port-o-call0

No, it's through my landlord - it's the same price, if not a lot cheaper than halls because gas and electric are included. It's £200k just to buy a 2 bed flat in Aberdeen at the moment, rent everywhere up here is very expensive. Can't get anywhere cheaper, we are in about the cheapest possible to be honest. I do live with my mum in the holidays which works out best.0
