I’m v. poor - help me find cheapest UK to Oz flight Oct/Nov?

Thanks for all the replies and concern, I will be reading up on the cycling a LOT beforehand and will take sensible precautions, work my way up to it and take plenty of excess food and water. Worst case I die horribly in the desert, but hopefully I’ll be fine and I’m looking forward to it

I’m quite happy to spend a month cycling between Melbourne and Brisbane. I’m going to be in the country for 1-2 years and I will be doing it in stages with long stops of perhaps weeks or months inbetween rather than doing it all in one go.
I’m aware of the need for $5,000 + monies to cover a flight back but my available credit card balance can count and my £3k available balance takes care of most of that. I’m becoming homeless because I am running low on posessions to sell for money and I can no longer justify paying, but I’m not completely penniless or I wouldn’t be able to afford to get there.0 -

You didnt say how far you can cycle in one day and where are you going to stop for the night
I thought you could only stay for 12 months on a wh visa0 -
In all honesty I have no idea of the former - I've only been cycling for 6 months or so after not since a teenager, plus I'm very unfit at the moment. I'll need to work up my fitness and cycling gradually while there. As to the latter I'd have a tent with me so would wild camp.
You can only stay for 12 month on a WH visa. However once you have worked in one of a certain list of jobs for 3 months (agricultural work which I'll be doing is one of those) then you can re-new it once for an additional 12 months on top of your original time.0 -

And the rest - it took me a month to get from Melbourne to Brisbane and I drove! There are numerous parts of the trip where you wont see anything for hundreds of miles. And you'll be cycling?
Sounds like a pie in the sky idea. Why not circumnavigate the globe in a Kayak instead?0 -

LOL, I really dont think the OP has thought his idea through but you cant tell him.
No idea how he thinks he can carry enough food and water with him
He jokes about dying in the desert, if he tries what he is suggesting that is what will happen but hey ho, each to their own0 -
This sounds like the craziest ideas I've heard in a long time. Is the OP trying to get a book and film deal out of this?
Besides, Australia is one of the toughest countries in the world for immigration control. Turn up up a one way ticket and a bike and you'll be put back on the next plane home.0 -
cross a bulldog and a shih tzu get a bullshih t. not going to happen .OP when you get your tickets visa & self together come back and ask proper questions . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

I am not sure the course there will help you with your cycling0 -

I’ve looked into it on an Australian cycling forum and a number of people talk about long cycle tours between cities. One poster even mentions a two week cycle ride from Melbourne to Brisbane. I wouldn’t do it in stages over month(s) rather than so quickly, but the trip clearly is possible.Doshwaster wrote: »This sounds like the craziest ideas I've heard in a long time. Lol, not at all. My ambitions are more simple and humble than that.
I’m really not expecting any problem getting into the country. You are required to either have a return ticket or enough available funds to be able to pay for one and I will do the latter. It is also perfectly feasible to take a bike with you on a plane and simply ‘having a bike with you’ is not grounds for instant deportation back out of Australia.OP

Er... yes, actually. How did you know? Do you know me in real life?
I’m sure my course wouldn’t be any help with cycling, but then university education generally isn’t.0 -
Has StudentPhil just put in an appearance?
