Another vote here for the Dyson Animal (purple cylinder), I have a lab who sheds hair at the rate of knots. The Dyson is great, you do have to wash the filters out at least every few months and have had mine for near on five years and have never had a problem with it. They have replaced the head atleast once a year as I do have a bit of OCD with hoovering!0

Just to add.. I've hauled my old Henry Xtra out of storage and have been reminded just how good it is! Whatever was causing the pong seems to have disappeared too :T."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

Never been a Dyson fan. We had a Henry hoover, and it was great but didn't quite get all the hairs up, so we recently bought a Vax Mach Air Pet - it's fantastic. It has some excellent brushes on the floor part which work wonders at brining in the hairs. If you pull a rubber soled shoe over the carpet you'll see the hairs starting to gather, if we do this after usng th vax pet we don't get any!0

Sebo x400 Pet. Without a shadow of a doubt the best vacuum cleaner I've ever owned. Picks up every single cat hair (we have three cats).

Praise the Teutonic Miele god! After reading this thread I couldn't stop thinking about a new hoover... saw they were £30 off in Argos at £199.99, and had £25 worth of Nectar points sitting on my card, so popped out and bought one this morning. We have 2 cats, both shorthaired but one sheds a massive amount, she's very soft and her hair just gets everywhere even though we regularly use the furminator on her outside.
DH had hoovered the house Saturday afternoon, but as always if you get down on your hands and knees there's a clearly visible layer of cat hair. It has been like this for the 14 months since we got the cats. Anyway I just hoovered all over with the Miele with the turbo brush attachment and it is ALL GONE!! Amazing. I keep dropping to the floor to look at it again. So very glad I bought it! You can actually tell the carpet is cleaner, walking around in bare feet, it just feels so much nicer. So the carpet has got a stay of execution as we had been talking about replacing it with wood downstairs even though we only had it fitted in Dec 09.
The other incredible thing is how quiet it is compared to our previous vax (but then I thought that was ridiculously loud when I first bought it). The cats after a brief heads up to see what this new thing was, returned to their naps and I vacuumed around them!
As I was hoping, the cylinder takes up so much less space, it can go in a cupboard which is much more easily accessible and doing the stairs was a dream. I stumped up for the 10 year guarantee as well, all in all £200 very well spent. hurrah!!0 -
Was just gonna post about the miele cat and dog- I loved mine- lasted 5 years- then motor went (didnt take outthe extended guarentee)- I replaced it with another miele ( not a cat and dog coz I just used the old heads). Also sold the broken miele on ebay for 30 quid for spares. My new miele stoped working after a year but the guarentee was excellent- they sent a special box for it- had it collected- fixed it with a new motor and sent it back to me. I love the mieles- me thinks you made a good choice0

Picked up my new Meile from Argos today, love it, love it, love it...love it even more as DH thinks its a new toy so has vaccumed round to try it out!! The bags are on offer in Debenhams, got a 10% code, free delivery and Topcashback, so bought a job lot!!
Thank you everyone for you opinions.

I have a Jack Russell Corgi mix who sheds with his 2 coats and a long haired Chihuahua so you can imagine hairs that get shed! Homebase's own brand for £40 is doing a great job! If it breaks after a year no loss there for me.0

I have one of these. Great vacuum cleaner, I bought a reconditioned one like this, comes with 12 month guarantee same as new ones. Can't go wrong for 80 quid.
