I have had Dysons - and yes, they can clog up with hair and you lose suction, but they are fairly easy to dismantle and fix. My biggest gripe is the wand on the end of the hose makes them difficult to use on stairs.
Loved the Henry and the turbo brush was brilliant with animal hair, but the thing started to get horribly smelly after about 6 months use. No amount of cleaning and using perfumed inserts would disguise the niff of dog and dander! I'd still be using it if it didn't make me heave every time I turned it on _pale_.
I currently have a cheapo Electrolux but it is useless with long, fine cat hair and in 2 years we have used about 6 fan-belts. They just disintegrate for no reason and are really fiddly to replace.
Doubt I could afford a Miele but the Vax look good.

Another vote for the miele cat and dog here. Agree that the bags are on the expensive side but it is worth it and I only have one of the bedrooms (only cat gets in there); hall, stairs and landing carpeted and two large rugs - the rest of the rooms have wood/tile/lino floors so I sweep the worst up before using the vac so I don't use too many bags.

I bought a Miele cat and dog upright vacuum too last month - its brilliant. 10 year guarantee too :) I got mine from the co op through cashback and at a discount (£45 off) as a member. Paid £30 for the ten year guarantee. I love the fact the extending hose will stretch up all my stairs (just) with the turbo brush attached to it - fantastic. And my Parson Russell has the short white spikey hairs that seem to have velcro attached to them once they get in the carpet!

Have a good look for best price.

Is your Dyson out of the five year warranty? Have you considered their fixed price service which includes parts? Think it's £60 tho it may have gone up since I looked.

For Smelly Dyson owner, have you removed and washed both filters?
I need to do this every two months or so, otherwise the machine smells.

Miele Cat and Dog here too. Great vacuum, really picks up the hair well and the suction is superb.

The only negative for me is the price of the bags. There are cheaper copies available but I've heard so many stories about the cheapo bags causing motor failure that I only buy the Miele genuine ones.

I have three cats (about to get two more) and I too have a Miele Cat and Dog and have found it FAR superior to the three Dysons I previously had. Not only is it better for hairs, but also for cat litter on a tiled/laminated floor which the Dyson was absolutely pathetic at picking up.

In terms of the bags, I too use the genuine Miele ones. I agree that they are expensive, but have you tried those sold on Amazon? Usually around the £8-£9 mark with free delivery and they are genuine Miele. (sorry, not allowed to post link being as I'm a newbie :rotfl:)

miele all the way. I got mine from the co-op a few years ago and I bought a 10 year guarantee with it for an extra £30 but in addition to the guarantee you also got a box of filters and bags that are worth nearly £30 so a total bargain. It is great at picking up hair too, the turbo brush on fluffy carpets gives your arms a total workout as it sooks the carpet and dirt up.

Any opinions on the Miele C&D cylinder version specifically? Although out bogstandard upright vax does an OK superficial job with 2 shorthaired cats, when you look closely there's a layer of fur all over the carpets. Would like to get a better one, but want a cylinder. Our hoover lives in a cupboard and we have to lift it over sofas to get it out, a cylinder one could live somewhere more convenient which I think would help me be more inclined to hoover more regularly!
  • I got a cheap and cheerful Swan upright with a removable handle as I had hurt my back and couldn't manage the cylinder cleaners I have always preferred.

Even this cheapie does a better job than the Dyson Animal cylinder cleaner that I spent a fortune on ten years ago. I think it's the brush thingummiwotsit, as the brush heads on cylinders just aren't up to the job.

I have had short haired dogs, short haired cats that moult copiously and a longhair cat that looks like a sack of angora combings. The cheapie does them all, the Dyson couldn't cope with the normal cat hair at all, never mind the long hair.

Oh, and my eldest DD also seemed to be in permanent moult with two foot long red hairs twisting round the Dyson - no issue with the new cleaner at all.
