Having that ad pulled from Gumtree isn't doing anything to get yourself housed, is it? Still, I don't know how to break this to you but Hounslow is not in London. It's a sh!thole, so no-one who had any choice would want to live there any way.

Depends if it's self-contained or not.

If it's part of someone's home (a lodger offer) then you are fine to discriminate on the grounds of sex / religion etc. Same as you can in relation to a nanny, for example.

A studio flat is a self contained unit.
If it was part of someone's home then it would be a bedsit.

This is a British consumer forum so I reckon it's safe to say that the majority of posters on here are in the UK. I suspect this forum would be less than useless to Johnny Foreigner.

Can a man not be a nanny then?

    Now that's sexual discrimination!

A man can be a nanny. However, in terms of in-house employment of that kind, it's fine for the employer to discriminate on the grounds of sex.

    Whaaah! Because.......?

The world's gone mad. Political correctness here, but over there.....?
  • My son and five male friends (all students) when house-hunting were told by several letting agents that it was their policy not to let to all-male groups. Mixed groups or all-female groups were fine, apparently. The reason given was that all-male groups caused more damage and were generally 'trouble'.

They found one who'd let to them in the end, but I'm sure the ones who wouldn't were guilty of illegal discrimination.

I'm female but when I was a student tried renting with some male friends and missed out on our first choice because they did not want men in the house- ridiculous. Probably for the best we missed out as I bet those landlords would not be very good. Plenty of women cause damage and these 'women only' landlords will find that out eventually.

I also recently saw a job advertised for Christians only (not a live in position) so it looks like there is still plenty of discrimination of all sorts about the place.
