Help - Halifax Turned Up Last Night

Don't know if anybody can advise on this but I have a large OD with Halifax and gone over my OD limit. I knew they had suspended my account - am planning on doing a D-I-Y DMP in the New Year but last night a man turned up with ID and papaerwork and said he had been sent by the Halifax to take my switch card and chequebook. I gave him them and signed a form. Does this mean that the Halifax will keep turning up at my house demanding money (the money I owe them)? I was so upset and embarrassed last night and don't think I can cope if they start turning up demanding money. Any advice much appreciated ..................................................

As they didn't demand any money last night I don't think they will - but that's just an opinion. Hopefully someone with more legal knowledge or experience will be along soon.
Can I ask why you are doing the DMP yourself? Would it not be less stressfull to have a company like CCCS do it for free for you?

how much do you owe them?
  • This needs resolving now. My first thought was it's unusual for soembody to come and collect chequebook and card liek that. they usually just block them and notify you it has been blocked. I'm always suspicious though.
I would ring one of the DMP charities today. get the situation resolved asap, at least xmas can be enjoyed as much as possible in the knowledge you are working on resolving your difficulties.

The CCCS have disowned us as we didn't declare the Halifax debt to them and Payplan won't let us do a DMP with them as some of the debts are with a DCA and they apparently won't deal with Payplan so we are stuck really.

As I said in other posts none of the DMP charities can help us so don't know where to turn. We are trying to resolve the problem and are trying to work out a DMP ourselves as we don't know any one else who we can turn to but if you do please advise. Thanks

Hi Weller - you really need to post a full SOA listing all income, expenditure and debts, before we can give you any decent advice over your options.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • To endorse other comments - be honest first of all with yourself and others - you've not been so far and it's made it worse. How did you think your payment plan would work when you had ignored what is presumably one of your larger creditors.....

[Please don't suggest you forgot £12K of debt - it's too much of a reality stretch]

No wonder you are feeling so paniced. Firstly, it is time to draw a big fat line, take a deep breath and vow that you are going to tackle ALL your debts once and for all, and to get moving on it NOW (as much as possible).
I'm not great with SOA's and stuff like that - but I would suggest going to the CAB and seeing if you can plead with them to help you. Chances are you won't be able to get an appointment until the new year - but if you deal with it now at least you'll have an appointment. Wait until the new year and you'll no doubt be joined by many who've woken to face their debts with the CC bills on their doorstep. IMO it's worth a try.

  • Go to Citizens Advice, these cannot disown you.
Firstly, get a grasp of your situation so you know what is what. Then time for drastic action. Read my New Year action plan thread for a start and then go from there.
