I've driven in the USA and had my car searched for fruit when crossing from one state to the next.

Really ? From State to State.

Can you give me an idea which State/s so I can look out for it next time ?

many thanks for all your advice and comments, especially to liviboy - I myself am a broxburn gal!

Am also taking a few foodstuffs in my hold suitcase - coffee, teabags, washing powder etc.

Thanks for your input, very usefull

An observation, someone mentioned tomatoes would be consficated if brought back into the UK. I would suggest having a look at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Foreigntravel/beforeyoutravel/dg_064942 especially the Personal Import page.

    From Turkey I can bring
As many Bananas, tomatoes etc as I wish in my hand luggage
Aubergines I can bring 2 kg

    A question
How would you feel / deal with a bottle of ice, I know it's frozen water, but it's not a liquid. It's not a trick, coming back from Turkey they have let me through with a bottle of ice, yes I have shown it to them. They have consficated water from fellow travellers

    Once again thanks

I can't answer questions about importation of goods/food/etc. As somebody pointed out earlier Security and Customs are 2 very different departments. Although we work very closely in some situations, you pass through security to board and pass through customs upon landing (in *most* situations, especially in the UK). Hopefully a UKBA officer might be having a nosey and would be able to answer these direct points. (additionally, Security is a private-company responsibility (airport operator, in Edinburgh's case BAA Limited), Customs is a Government/Crown Department.

Unfortunately ice wouldn't be allowed through, although 'technically' a solid, Ice will melt very quickly into it's liquid form, especially at departure lounge temperatures.

Same rule goes for 'ice packs' etc that people have in picnic boxes. (slightly different rules apply for medicines that are required to be kept at cold temperatures, but doctor can advise of the correct procedure).

Not a trick question but one we get quite a lot (alongwith the "I can melt candle wax into a liquid so why not ban candles?" - sometimes common sense really is the answer, unless kept hot the wax will solidify very quicky...)

California is the main one I believe. They may not do it all the time.

I can recall being stopped by the Border Patrol in California (& I think Arizona) when they were looking for Illegal Immigrants, but I hadn't even heard of the Californis Fruit Patrol until it was mentioned on here, and then I googled it.
