Some people seem to get away with it, and some don't, but I think one point is being missed.
If you eat your sandwiches in flight, then maybe no problem. BUT, I think if you have any salad in your sandwich, and don't eat it, it might be a different matter.

Last time I flew to Canada, they asked for a declaration before landing, that you weren't carrying any vegetable / organic items.
They used to be very hot on things that could spread diseases to their own agricultural / livestock system.
Don't forget, our last foot and mouth disease epidemic, was tracked to illegal food importation by a Chinese restaraunt.

The onus is on the passenger to make sure he's not bringing anything prohibited into the destination country. That is not up to the departing airport security staff to police, nor is it of their concern.

I was harking back to a previous life when I flew business or first class only. I don't fly now - partly because after 600 flights you don't want to see another plane let alone travel on one and the other being I can't afford hols as i'm newly self employed!
I guess when I feel up to/can afford to travel again i'll have to take sandwiches. Food down the back is rough. ;)

Sorry, I must have misread. I thought you were insinuating that airport security might be censoring food on behalf of their brethren overseas.

Well I could have said no, but for the sake of a few euros and not being allowed through security, common sense tells you not to argue. Eating it all wouldn't have been practical was one of those larger milka bars, one of the varieties you don't get here :(

I completely disagree. Common sense does not tell me to bend over and accept what some ill-informed imbecile is telling me, if that which he is telling me is a load of crap.

Too many airport security staff think they can make the rules up as they go along, probably because too many people just let them. It might only be a bar of chocolate, but it's my bar of chocolate, not his and I won't throw it away because it's not a prohibited item and I'm entitled to have it.

I once had a sniffer dog at Newark Airport detect that bananas had been in our hand luggage and could not be allowed into the US. We explained that they had been eaten on the flight and said to the poker faced official that the dog had great detection powers. After a quick look see in our hand Luggage, we were on our way. The dog seemed much friendlier that it's handler:eek:

I don't speak spanish, and couldn't exactly convey this to them, so the easier option was to accept it, would I kick up alot of stick for the sake of 3 euros? My duty free things, then yes I would.

Just to clarify that you CAN take quite a lot of food through Airport Security in the UK - most certainly sandwiches.

You can even take Baked Beans, Chunky Soup ('smooth' soup like Lentil can't go though), Currys, Chocolate bars (but not mousse) you can also take "chunky" yoghurt/rice pudding but again not smooth/pure yoghurt.

You can take nail scissors and paper scissors with a blade up to 6CM, you CAN take knives (blade up to 6CM) as long as they are not lock-knives (Scots: you can take plastic Sgian Dubhs, but not 'real' ones that can be removed from the sheath), nail files (metal or "sandpaper") are fine.

You can, and I've seen this many times with our Ryanair passengers), take 2x 500ml bottles of coke through. They were decanted into 10x 100ml bottles bought from Boots and placed into their clear, re-sealable plastic bag which was sealed to a close. (NB the bag should be of a 1Litre capacity/ roughly 20cm by 20cm).

The only issue we still have is folk with too many liquids. PLEASE NOTE: the plastic bag MUST be sealed (or able to seal) to a close. Liquids are tested at airport security and it is for these tests the bag must be sealed. ALL liquids, gels, pastes, creams and sprays (including: toothpaste, hairspray, perfume, deodorant, Vaseline, mascara, alcoholic miniatures, honey, jam, etc etc etc). Liquids bags should NOT contain toothbrushes, powder make-up, solid 'stick' deodorants, lipstick, etc as these are not liquids)

Mums and Dads: BABY milk (note: BABY) CAN be taken through security but it should be in a bottle and you will be asked to taste some or all of the products you are bringing through, including baby food in jars if the jars are over 100g. Kiddie's drinking 'cups' full of ribena or water will be emptied as this is not seen as a necessary foodstuff like baby milk is. Note if mums or dads require sterilised water at an airport, Pubs and 'most' retailers are able to supply it.

Happy to answer any other questions you guys have, but none of my colleagues at Edinburgh would bin sandwiches, are you sure the pax didn't request the sandwich to be binned as it may have been old/out of date? I get that quite a lot from passengers "oh can you just bin that for me please?".

Oh and to the previous poster, I don't class myself or my colleagues as imbeciles, many working at EDI are actually well-qualified people (in other fields, including law, teaching and nursing), who do the job solely for it's very good salary. We don't go out of our way to be annoying, we are actually monitored continuously on our customer service and compliance.
