Well, I went down without my new car key, the alarm still went off.

I had reason to empty my bag all over the floor as I couldn't find my house keys (found them now - left in car).

I found a Rimmel Mascara that I bought in Superdrug Cardiff about 6 weeks ago, that had a security tag stuck to it underneath the cellophane - the alarm never went off when I left Superdrug, could it be that a) Superdrugs system was not working b) even a deactivated tag in one store could still set off an alarm in another? (It has never activated any alarm system in other stores I have been into since).

Anyhow, have now peeled it off, so my next visit will be interesting.

Short of walking in butt naked, I have no idea.

It could be that superdrug uses a certain type of alarm system,or their alarm columns are more sensative,or you were carrying the handbag on a different side than you usuall do,causing it to be nearer the column.Did you put the mascara through the alarms again to test it finally,on its own?

Of course it is not. The only people who can conduct a search are the police and they need suspicion to do so.

Why should I have to explain "whatever" to someone with whom has no authority over me or let them see and even trawl though what could be sensitive or confidential documents, medicines or implements.

Some people roll over to these thugs too easily!

    see post number 6 .

I'd say, "I have work files in here that are confidential", I would happily flick through the pages for them at a distance, but realistically they wouldn't need to look through sensitive paperwork, you can hardly stash a joint of beef, bottles of whisky, or other tagged items inside sheets of paper.

The point is you don't have to, so why should you!

If you do this then you are legitimising their acts when they have no right to.

What if you had just purchased a pack of sexy undies for your partner in another shop. Would you be happy to just open up the bag for all to see? I would not!

Extend this a bit. The alarm went off. No one does anything, but the security guys turn up at your house at midnight. You have nothing to hide so feel free to let them in......

    Of course you wouldn't!

Well the people in Tesco now know me, as they hear me come in :rotfl::rotfl:.

I didn't want to get into the mix of the "I know my rights" brigade. However, if I was stopped - I'd know I would be innocent, so rather than ask for the Police to attend, (they have enough to do in my opinion), and would have no qualms about opening my bag to a staff/security member.

Saying that my widowed bald Dad approx age 80 at the time (RIP bless him), was stopped going out of Asda, as a pack of hair rollers had got snagged onto the bottom layer of his trolley :rotfl::rotfl:. The security chap had a sense of humour, removed said offending rollers and let him on his way.

There are parts of the world where it is standard practice for shop staff to search, or at least look in every bag taken out the store.

I recall being in Australia a few years back and being quite taken aback when I was approached on my way out of a chemist by someone wanting to search my bag. It soon became clear that it is simply custom and that you are expected to present your bags to someone to check on your way out.

Although I think this whole debate is a bit silly, what about nightclubs? Submitting to a search is a condition of entry to virtually all nightclubs in the UK, are the same "rights" being violated there?

What if a nightclub bouncer catches someone getting upto allsorts in a toilet cubicle, takes them to one side and searches them for drugs? I suspect most would just go along with it, whether they were upto no good or not!

The point is you don't have to, so why should you! Because it would save my time, Police time and I have nothing to hide.

If you do this then you are legitimising their acts when they have no right to. Maybe not, but they have a job to do - and I'd also be hopeful for a voucher for an apology

What if you had just purchased a pack of sexy undies for your partner in another shop. Would you be happy to just open up the bag for all to see? I would not! Ha ha - fat chance - yes I have seen enough of life to not be embarrassed anymore - in fact they would go redder than me!.

Extend this a bit. The alarm went off. No one does anything, but the security guys turn up at your house at midnight. You have nothing to hide so feel free to let them in...... No way, I have cupboards full of their product - they could point at anything and I'd have chucked the receipt out ages ago. That would not be a reasonable time between alarm, and intervention. They are welcome to stop me between the exit and my car.

Of course you wouldn't! - Maybe I would!

There are so many other ways to get round this, mostly using kids who run off with the legitimate deactivated shopping tags, whilst mum is still paying with the nicked ones in the bag.

As with all jobs, let's try to get things sorted out at ground level before resorting to a High Horse Defensive attitude. It saves time and money in the long run.

Agree hollydays, NoSatisfaction is not describing my life at all :rotfl:
  • An older relative of mine has some horrible medical problems and is literally wired up over her body with tubes pumping pain killers and drugs in to her.

She bravely carries on and goes shopping.

One of the pumps that she has to carry sets of the alarms occasionally and it does look like something is hidden under her clothing.

Why should she have to let other people know she is being medicated, after all, not even doctors can discuss it with others without permission.

I can imagine if she was searched she would be mortified and I suspect the security guards would be calling the emergency services if they touched the wrong button on the thing!

Perhaps you could suggest to her that she gets a letter from her doctor, but these alarms are not like metal detectors that pick up every piece of metal. If they were, ever time a zip,any metal implement like a handbag clasp or car keys went through it would go off.
