Hi there, I'm off to spain (Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura) in July and was about to follow up on Stilltheones plan for internet access. However, the suggested modem is sold out, I've looked at a few others but they either don't say if they're unlocked or appear a little complicated and I'm not confident I'll end up with a working internet connection when I'm over there. If anyone in the know could advise on the next best option, or where else to buy the exact same modem (no part number to go off :( ) that would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

I was recently in Spain for a couple of weeks and bought a PAYG sim card from https://www.holidayphone.co.uk with a 1GB data allowance +1GB extra valid for a month. They needed a photo of my passport but it arrived with full instructions on setting up my phone for call forwarding and APN. It was certainly cheaper than O2 roaming!

I made sure my android phone was network unlocked by getting a free vodafone sim and seeing if it worked before I went, and mine lets me set up a wifi hotspot I could then use on the laptop too.
  • Someone will think that I'm trying to promote tripneter or something, but no haha.

Last time I was in Spain, I had a great experience with TRIPNETER! I could use my devices (ipad, laptop) with an easy pocket wifi. Check the web, it is quite easy and cheap.
But i dont know if the send the device to canary islands!

I too am visiting Spain soon - I'll be there for two months in an apartment rental that does not have an internet connection.

I've looked at the options suggested above but their (reduced to) 128Kbps speed puts me off them as I need it for a remote desktop connection which is fairly traffic heavy so I am looking for a high-speed 3G solution.

I saw this option from Simyo: https://www.simyo.es/simyo/portal/store?pricePlan=4 which gives a 5Gb high-speed traffic allowance for 25€ and apparently no contract (pre-paid) however when I contacted their customer services department I was informed that I would need to present a NIE (national identity card) to get it - something I don't have as I will only be a temporary visitor to Spain - and I thought they were now obsolete/being phased out anyway?

Can anyone advise re: the Simyo 3G prepaid internet or suggest another high-speed alternative. Pre-paid vs contact though because I will only be there for eight weeks.

You can still buy it here, but it's not the fastest modem out there. Though of course the advantage is that it doesn't need unlocking.

To install it on a Windows 7 machine, you will have to disable UAC temporarily, then re-enable once installed.

Once installed, you can update the Connection Manager for the modem. Latest version here.
  • Just got back from Spain. I bought a Spanish Orange sim card from an eBay seller (based in Valencia, Spain) and they registered it under my passport number. Apparently when I got over there all I needed to do was send a text to 470 with the words ALTA DELFIN and I'd have access to the internet.

I took 2 unlocked phones with me and an unlocked MIFI dongle.

Tried sending the text from both phones but neither would send the message.

Contacted the seller and provided the SMS centre number to check it was right and to see if they had any ideas on getting me up and running.

Completely hopeless, although they replied to my emails (sent from a local WI-FI hotspot) they really didn't have a clue. After 4 days of emails they stopped replying, it was all very frustrating.

I managed to confirm the SMS centre number I was using was correct but both phones failed to send the text.

Next time I'll just go to a local shop, buy one from there and get them to set it up for me.

    Cheers!

I have an unlocked 3 Mifi. I have bought 2 sim cards from the ebay sellar in Valencia and am worried about the reports. I am going to Los Christianos which does not have a Carrefour. Does anyone know if you can purchase a mobile data sim with say 3gb allowance in the resort?
