Internet in Spain?

Hi, I'm writing my dissertation in coming months and am also going on a week holiday to spain. I will be typing up the report during the holiday but will require the internet, possibly via a dongle.

What would be a good way of doing this?

I'm considering buying a dongle and have initially found T-mobile would do me the dongle plus £10 for 50mb abroad. (dongle would be £20)

Though I'm afraid I may need more internet..

Any ideas?

Buy your own modem here for £14. When you get to Spain, pop in to Carrefour for a mobile broadband SIM. Cost 10 euros. Comes with a 5 euro credit balance. 100MB of data per day for 1 euro per day. For the rest of that day after you have used 100MB, the speed slows to 128kbps.
If not available, they may have a common or garden Prepaid SIM for 10 euros, which has 10 euros of credit within. With this SIM you get 20MB per day for 50 cents per day. For the rest of that day after you have used 20MB, the speed slows to 128kbps..

If you need more data(for the Data SIM), you can buy a 1 GB or 3 GB data package for 19 & 29 euros respectively(plus IVA). This will last for up to 30 days.

You will need to enter this new Profile in to the O2 Connection Manager(via the spanner icon):

APN: CARREFOURINTERNET
Username: Leave blank
Password: Leave blank

You can buy the Carrefour modem for 29 euros(includes 5 euros of data credit) if you wish, but it might be locked for use for that Network only, so you won't be able to use it elsewhere unless you unlock it. The UK for example. The modem to which I have linked can be used anywhere.

buy a dongle, vodafone as they will work with voda spain also. Then buy a voda chip of ebay unlimited 7 day is 19 euro

Depending where you are going and staying, many hotels offer free wifi, some cafes do, and some marinas do, and some Mcdonalds.

Thankyou for the Links! With these 1GB and 3GB packages is that 3GB total lasting 30days or per day?

Do you have a relevant link for this? Ideally I'd like to have a system in place before I leave for spain but if I can use the modem you've linked to and it's as easy as popping into a hypermarket and buying the sim then that'd be great.

For the benefit of others also, the place I'm staying is a villa outside of town that doesn't have internet, so I won't have any access to public wifi at all in this way.

you sure you would be in a vodafone or 02 area

What are you talking? What do O2 or Vodafone have to do with it?

The Carrefour SIM is on the Orange Spain network. Even if not in a 3G zone, there should be EDGE.

Locked Vodafone Dongle £20. Vodafone Spain SIM with 10 euro credit from EBay £15 1GB of Data with Vodafone 19 euros(£17)

It is no more 'Unlimited' than any of the packages I have mentioned. You get 1GB of data over the period for which you pay. Once you have used 1GB the speed slows to 128kbps. This is how they can claim 'unlimited'.

So in the end, you would have spent £42* on 1GB of data and a locked modem. *This figure doesn't include IVA, so will be higher.


My solution £14 for unlocked modem and 10 euros(£9) for SIM. That will get you 100MB per day for five days. Alternatively, add 14 euros(£12.50) to the credit to make it up to 19 euros and buy 1 GB of data. So a total of £35.50 for 1 GB of Data and an unlocked modem. Just like Vodafone, once data is used up, the speed slows to 128kbps for the rest of the period.

I don't think the purchase of 1GB is cost effective. 100 MB per day for 1 euro is much better. Top the card up with 5 euros and that is you covered for the week. 700MB of data(if holiday is seven days) and unlimited 128kbps usage each day for a total outlay of £27.50.

If just a one week holiday, buying the 1GB package will mean that you are paying out an extra £8 for 300MB.

Of course there is the 3GB package. But you'll be neglecting your work if you are using all that.

These figures don't include IVA, so bear in mind that buying the data packages will cost more than listed.

Only the option in bold contains the fully stated cost for the week.

Thanks Stilltheone, looks like my mind is made up and I'll take as you suggest! for the record, I may still go for the 3GB.. but only because I'm in engineering and I'll likely spend plenty of time accessing technical documents!
