We spent £10 yesterday and £2 today. Well, that's if we don't include eating out... do people include this in their grocery budget?

Good point! I too have included eating out and so many more but I guess that will not be in the grocery list but on a family expenses list.

Let me too re-look at my numbers:)

as a postscript to my previous post, I fancy making a cherry and walnut cake tomorrow - do you think it would be ok to use the recipe I have for a lemon drizzle cake and instead of grating any lemon zest or putting any lemon juice in the cake, just adding cherries and walnuts in their place ? I have spotted some walnuts in my cupboard so only need to buy cherries :j what else goes well with cherry and walnut ??

I don't include eating out but I do include takeaways. Its really up to you what you include. Some people have a separate budget for entertaining which includes parties and eating out? ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Just reporting in this weeks spends.....

£3 in local shop on bargain kitchen roll and loo roll (9 pack of Dixcel for £2)
£13.63 in Mr T for things for the week.
The Mr T bill was actually £26 but I'd exchanged £5 clubcard voucher for a £10 pet food voucher and had ££2.50 in normal clubcard vouchers and a 35p off grapes voucher bringing it down to £13ish:j I now have enough dog food for at least 2 weeks if not longer for free! My spend did also include about £2.50 on treats for the weekend that weren't at all necessary but well deserved!

Very pleased with August's spends so far at a total of £29.60!

I have now calculated my numbers correctly and am totally over budget. Now that both my ravenous teenagers are at home nothing lasts. The fridge is empty and the freezer full. Food will last longer because they cant be inconvenienced to prepare meals.
For the record and to see how I improve this is my official August spend

Week 1 - £96.76 (mostly party food for my daughters 18th)
Week 2 - £65.31 (far to easy to spend on my card)
Week 3 - £15.84 (cash only this time and WILL wait untill Sunday)

Please put me down for an August Budget of £254.00/£162.07

  • It is nearly a year since I was last here, and in that time we've moved to Australia (3 weeks ago) and we're currently on one income and paying more rent than we can really afford because we needed a furnished place fast. It's a six month lease so there are five months at least of living much more frugally than before. My budget for August is $1000 starting today, which is still more than a lot of people have but significantly less than what I used to spend. And OH is at home all day and doing much of the cooking, so I haven't got so much control over the shopping.

So far this weekend we have spent $80 but we haven't done the 'main shop' yet. Bought so far:

1 kg organic mandarins, 1 kg organic apples, 1/2 a cauliflower, 2.5kg local potatoes, feta cheese:$17.50 (the pricey bit was the feta)
Bread, milk, yoghurt, coconut milk, weetabix, green pepper (not cheap), soured cream, donuts (OH's 'treat' as he was shopping) and some other stuff I can't remember: $60ish OH says.

We have the fortnightly farmers market today and I'll go down and have a look and OH will go to the supermarket later to get some basics we need - baked beans, that kind of thing.

KuneKune22e it's bound to take you a while to learn what is the best value for money for you when you have moved to another country, so don't be too hard on yourself, just see how it goes and see what you use and don't etc. if you are doing the GC and taking control, you will soon see what is best to buy and what isnt'...hope it all works out great for you out there xx

Flat Eric] Hope the cake goes well, have never tried that combination but it sounds lovely... also in reference to your previous post regarding spends, maybe look at what you spent your money on and see what was eaten, what was wasted etc. also I would really recommend a meal plan...If you did that for a week you may find you don't actually need anything for a week or just minimal stuff like milk etc... good luck with your challenge anyway x
