It is part of growing up for many.

My mum who bought me and my brother up from a very early age by herself, never ever has had a credit card or a loan, or owed anybody anything.

She has always said that getting into debt is a bad idea even frowning on borrowing money for anything off anybody. But that didn't stop me and my brother getting into debt reasonably early in our 20's. We both now thankfully have grown up and now have savings.

But all the talking in the world, won't neccesarily make the difference, some people I know my age 41, now own a house, with a mortgage virtually paid off, but in doing so they haven't had a very eventful life.

I on the other hand have had an eventful life, always virtually had what I wanted when I wanted, but only in the past 2 - 3 years, but I suddenly realised my lifestyle had to change or else where would I be in 20 years time. Those people will have their nice houses paid and settle down to enjoy retirement with probably savings in the bank, a few holidays a year and I will probably be looking at rent or moving to somewhere dirt cheap and living the best life I can afford.

Someone once said, there is a queue outside the cemetary gates, we can either stand quietly in line or join in with the buskers and entertainers. The key is to be able to do a bit of both.

jess..i was the same but my daughter who is now 22 and has seen sense and over the years she has listened to me about never getting into debt..she has done well and so much so that she is travelling the usa at the moment for 3 months due to saving hard.she does not live at home and at times must find things hard but all i have ever done for her is buying her first car
She has told me she will never have a credit card and i would be horrified if i heard she had one..it really pleases me that she has listened to me on financial matters.
Now just got to get my youngest indoctrinated, but she is only 12 and has 3k of money she has saved up herself, so i am sure she will be ok..I would be so sad if i found out any of my family had started to get into debt because there is only ever one winner. The wife and i have never had a credit card, never been in debt. not even a mortgage, paid cash for everything..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Can everyone please refrain from posting about the OP and the main topic so that we can have the meat and veg of the apples/foxy/ILW disagreement come to conclusion?
