Aww, Mrs W that is awful - trust me the only evil people are the scum who can break into someone's home and injure an innocent animal. Hope kitten is ok and they haven't taken anything too irreplaceable. Sending you :grouphug:

Mrs W - How horrible for you. We've been burgled in the past and it is truly awful. As for the poor little kitten - how could they......

I do hope they get the b*******s - hurting a poor defenceless animal and rummaging through all your possessions. Stealing is bad enough but trashing the place as well. You must feel dreadful.

I do hope they didn't steal anything of personal or sentimental value - some things are just "things" but precious to you things or items that have been gifted hold special memories and are irreplaceable.

We lost our wedding rings, my engagement ring and my eternity ring. OK they may not have been Cartier but they were special to me - especially my engagement ring. It wasn't expensive but OH bought it me from an antique fair - it was Victorian - a minute little emerald chip surrounded with tiny seed pearls. The burglars would have been lucky to get a fiver for it.

The police caught them but we never got our stuff back = they were druggies and I know they got 3 months in jail - they admitted to a whole string of offences.

Anyway I hope you get help from the police and insurance companies. Take care of yourself - you will be in a state of shock.

Sending you lots of hugs (sorry can't do the buggy thing) - will be thinking of you.

    xxx

A quietish day here, very dark and murky.

Went for physio and then popped into C*stcoto for a bit of stock up - was running late so just bought some food items and didn't mooch.

    Nails

Molly first thing to remember is a nail takes about 6 months to grow so you'll need to be patient with any treatments.

There are a number of paint on hardeners and they can be quite good - look at the Sally Hansen range - Boots, Superdrug, most supermarkets.

However, I think it also pays to take the long view and adopt a more sophisticated multi-disciplinary approach.

There are many causes of soft splitting nails, harsh detergents, wear and tear, vitamin deficiency, poor blood circulation and the side effects of certain medications .

When OH was hospitalised he was on a cocktail of drugs and his nails were badly affected, actually lifting a couple of toenails completely.

I know you take a fair number of meds - it might be worth checking to see if any of them could be causing your problem. I'm not suggesting you stop the meds, it will just give you an idea of what you are up against.

The best advice I can give is:

Keep them short and trim/file into an oval shape, following the shape of your finger tips. The oval gives the strongest sides to help withstand side splits.

Use an emery board, never a metal file.

File in one direction only, no see-saw action - we're not felling trees.

Feed and nourish the nails - massage with a nail and cuticle cream, a product called Nailoid if you can get it. I'm currently using a Sally Hansen one £4 from Sainsbury's.

Remember that the nails (both hands and toes) are on the periphery of the body and blood flow may be a problem. Massage and/or using a buffer will help stimulate blood flow to the nails and feed them essential nutrients. You can do this watching TV:rotfl:

Wear rubber gloves and avoid all harsh chemicals. Wear gloves when it's cold to protect the cuticles (and hence the nails).

    Hope that helps.

Mrs W - Hope you are ok sweetie and that you manage to get some sleep tonight. Thinking of you.

    Early night tonight X

Firstly, a huge hug to Mrs W after an incident like that - can't put it into words on here

Secondly, I went for a run after work which was ok apart from feeling a little lacking in energy as its the next interval run in the programme and very quick in stages. I managed it well for half the run, extended it a bit too long and ran back on empty on the way back. Still it burnt off around 700kcals which is good as have gone over by 300kcal today on food diary.

Thirdly, 2 more slim comments today. I can't tell if I look slimmer as only 1lb has come off in the last 6 weeks, however it seems I do!

Fourthly, I'm about to slather on some nail oil too to keep my finger nails in nice order then sort out some paperwork for tomorrow, pack up some work stuff and then flop into bed. Super tired now!

I managed a bit of a walk in the fresh air and daylight today. Nothing major, just through our lovely city centre parks but I do feel better for it. I've been feeling a bit jaded ever since the clocks went back.

I was in the city because I've been shopping on the fab front today. I got these shoes :

They are Dune but from TKMaxx so I was very pleased as consderably cheaper than if I'd brought them from the proper shop. Mine are purple suede to match my 'wedding' outfit. Interestingly I put them on briefly for DH to see and he commented (unasked) that they looked good with the black opaques I was wearing. I'm still not sure. I'll have to try the whole lot on together.

I also got a satin covered hairband (50p) from Primark and a purple flower (£1) from Dotty P to make myself a bit of a fascinator. Last of the big spenders!:rotfl:

I also got some black trousers (size 12:D) from Top Shop. They are flared but with a pleat front (which I used to avoid) but at £20 in the sale, they're quite decent quality for the price. I'm going to try them on with heels and some of my 'work' jackets.

I got them to try this

mascara on me at the Benefit counter. It's really amazing, the nearest I've seen to false lashes. There's 10% off next week so I may treat myself. It's a bit OTT for everyday wear but really fab for evenings and special occasions.

My buying spree was completed with 2 pairs of fleecy insoles from the £ shop, so I'll stay cosy when the weather changes.;)

Great advice for nails LL. Mine have just about grown back from cutting them short when DD1 was moving house and they seem to have benefited from that. I buff them regularly and haven't used polish for 2 months but I'm going to have my usual French or American polish next week and I'm booked in for an eyebrow shape.

Sorry this has been all me, me,me:o I've been reading everyone's news and wanted to share some of mine.

Still thinking of Mrs W (and Mr W and kitten of course). Do try and get some sleep, new day tomorrow.
  • Hi Mrs W. Your news is v traumatic. I was weepy for months when it happened to me. My advice is to take kitten to vets for check up as she may have broken a bone and they often dont show pain. Read insurance document carefully before you claim and remember it can take a while before you realise what has been taken. Overall my burgulary wasnt too bad, i got a new computer and a new ring and a large pay out. Use the advice service from the police on how to beef up your security. Wishing you a happy ending...new stuff and enhanced security..

Mrs Wolfe - Im horrified and send you lots of supportive hugs. Poor little kitten xx

Lesson Learned and all those who have posted tips - Many thanks for your words of wisdom. My nails have been slowly getting worse since April but the 6 month time frame makes so much sense as I was in hospital last Christmas and that is when I was really poorly. My hair went grey overnight and my nails have become all bobbly and split. Slowly they are improving in that they are not so flaky but they still look awful. Anyway they are a work in progress x

I went for my twice monthly counselling session yesterday and was talking to him about this thread. He said that this is part of my "therapy" as it is really important to do everything impossible to improve self-esteem. My counsellor and my husband had said they could both see a really noticeable improvement in my appearance and that I was taking pride :T:T:T
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
