  • Hi,

I have been it with £70 worth of charges on last months bill due to this.

Phoned vodafone who insisted I must be watching !!!!!! and directed me to phonepayplus. Can't contact them during working hours so I've followed the advice on their website and emailed the companies who said they have unsubcribed me from their services on the 21st but they haven't. Said bill isn't die until the 20th and I'm in a really stuck position as to whether to pay and hope for a refund. Can anybody advise ?

The networks are very cynical on this. It would be simple to set up a 'confirmed opt-in' where you are sent a text confirming the charge and have to reply accepting the charge before starting the service.

I keep getting spam texts from Dominos wembley,i don't even live in the south of England,i tackled Dominos about this on their FB page,as did another person, but they said they couldn't stop the texts as it was a 3rd party marketing company that is used by others too,it doesn't have a number to report to my network providers spam reporting number

Send STOP ALL back to the number. Tell Dominos that the next step is for you to make a formal complaint to the Office of the Information Commissioner (the ICO has a phone number and people you can talk to). Even if Dominos use a 3rd party marketing company then they must take responsibility.

  • Please everyone be vigilante and watch out for these text, I've never even heard of the company Addison Lee but over the Christmas period started getting texts from them with discount codes etc. I ignored them at first thinking they were spam and was unable to block them, or read the number they were coming from It just had the name AddisonLee showing up like a contact, I eventually replied to stop it but I noticed on my phone bill that every text received including the stop confirmation message cost 10p each.

Please all look out for these and be sure to stop them immediately.

You will be charged by your mobile provider to send the STOP message. The cost is "one standard rate text message" but you won't find an entry for that anywhere in their tariff sheet.

Are you saying that you are also charged 10p every time you receive a message? Make a complaint to the Phone-paid Services Authority so they can investigate.
  • Frustratingly since moving to PlusNet mobile, they have declined to introduce the 7726 SPAM reporting number. I've highlighted this to them on their forums. The current excuse is that they don't support short code dialling. I've pointed out that when Vodafone first supported this, it put an additional digit at the start - they could do the same. Seems they can't be bothered.

I've logged a complaint with Ofcom but that's unlikely to go anywhere. ICO is not interested as they only take reports for individual SPAM messages.

It might seem like they can't be bothered but it seems quite common for virtual operators (those reselling the other networks) not to be able to offer shortcode dialling. I think what we really need is Ofcom to step in and require shortcode support as part of the reseller contracts - but we've been waiting for that for years and it seems like the regulator has little interest in regulating where it would benefit customers.
