I don't think that the chargeable texts came from a long number. Incoming texts from all numbers except short ones are free.
How can a data-only SIM receive texts? Most likely it's just EE's misleading notation in the bills. EE really owe an explanation to your dauthter

I can send texts from several data only contracts, EE payg broadband, my 3 Casual Broadband sim saves me a fortune roaming in EU, but I can use texts or calls (£0.00 monthly charge), funny enough circa 2009 my Orange Business data only sim would not even allow a call to free 158 customer services, nor 150 on my Orange dongle usb stick.

T-Mobile allowed voice and text on data, all EE sims are rebranded T-Mobile sims thus with EE you prob can useit for voice and outgoing texts

Completely depends on network if data only is really only data only.

Regardless... A incoming text may not have pc software which allows reading on a modem, but any chargeable text can be sent to ANY sim that carries a UK mobile number.

Its a blackhole loop. Unfair, it will get massively out of control from scammers before the big 4 put anythīng in place to stop it.

People with contract data/broadband sims or payg where you top up first THEN buy a data bundle are completely at the mercy of the big 4, there is nothing at network level to stop chargeable texts to a mobile broadband sim, I asked all of them a few years ago.

All a scammer (*cough*approved merchant) needs is a mobile number for data only, data with text capacity, data with text and voice capacity, same as a voice contract, only a mobile number is required.

EE pay montly broadband allows calls and texts at x pence per unit cost ontop of data allowance, as was T-Mobile before the merger as I mentioned above

Can anyone advise please. My daughter has an EE Osprey wifi box and is receiving spam SMS messages from 700146099 charging £4.50 a time. She has received 2 so far. She did not click to read the messages. I have spoken to EE and they cannot suggest how to stop them! Thank you

phonepayplus are aware of that rogue number, and who it is. If it is a payforit merchant EE are liable for the charges.

Has anyone else been inundated with texts from Virgin [nearly 10 a day] - about getting a travel-pass for web roaming abroad?
These unsolicited texts have been continuous over the last few days.

Sending to 7726 has not worked.

How to stop this? Users on Virgin media forum have not had the matter resolved by ringing Virgin.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

I wonder if when you leave a old T-Mobile EE signal onto a old Orange EE signal the network now thinks you are roaming, Virgin were a TMob reseller before the mErgEr with Orange.

I've been signed up to the TPS as soon as I got my 'phones (landline and mobile) and report any unwanted calls and messages to this bunch

    https://www.snapsurveys.com/swh/surveylogin.asp?k=138312369469

I get one, maybe two calls a quarter.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Thanks - but on TPS site:

''The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved.''

    ---
opt out option has not worked either

  • My problem is the spam texts don't have a tel number just words like "CanYouWin" so when you forward text to 7726 you just get an automated reply (from O2) asking for the number?
  • TextraSMS is a free and/or paid app that replaces your native SMS app and has a Blacklist option. I paid £1.49 for the Pro version many moons ago, money well spent.
