Public sector strikes - how will this affect the average family?

A rather frightening article in the Daily Fail has highlighted that the next round of strikes will be worse than 1984 :eek: I am of course not going to believe everything the Daily Fail says but even if public sector strikes do go ahead, how will these affect the average family?

Some schools will be closed, some hospitals may have reduced non urgent activities...

Depends whether they work in the public sector.... if so, then not only would they have the same economic situation that everyone else has, but also increased insecurity of employment within local government, possibility of potentially big changes to their future pension fund, and no pay for any days that they strike - which also means no pension contribution for those days.

You don't believe everything they print in the Daily Mail? Honestly, it would be much, much better for your mental health to not believe in anything whatsoever. They are obviously, and successfully it appears, trying to get Middle England in a panic. Don't fall for it!

Don't know about the average family but I will be on strike so my family will lose my wages for that day. And you know not to worry about the daily mail and their scaremongering, don't you? Worst paper in the world........

We haven't been balloted (yet) but I won't be going on strike - complete pointless waste of time and all that happens is you save your employer a days pay. DH went on strike for over 8 weeks at the behest of Unison, who used them to prove a political point and then their employers did what they were always going to do anyway.

And not forgetting, that if you are in a workplace where there are several unions prevalent, and you are not a member of a striking union then you have to cross the picket line to get to work (assuming members have a picket line). You cannot legally stay off work because you refuse to cross the picket line. Also, those on the picket line are not allowed to harass people who do cross the picket line.

Not sure if our school is closing and as a school governor I am awaiting a meeting!

If the teachers do strike and they close our school then I will prob be taking our girls out of school on the Friday!!

I thought the strike was on a Thursday?

One of my friends works in a school and she said the headmaster isn't allowed to ask them if they're going to strike, he has to ask if they're not going to strike.

Yes it is a Thursday but if they close the school over a pension and pay debate and not worry about our kids then I am seriously considering taking them out on the Friday! I think a few parents may use this opportunity too!
