Well no. Have I missed something? Just what *are* branch tellers for?
To handle cash and cheque transactions for customers.

To get as many cutomers as possible sat down with somebody who can flog them something.

They're not able to provide services that aren't available in the branch though.

So is it a service available in the branch?

The answer, fairly conclusively, appears to be no.

    So what's your point?

my point is, old fruit, that indeed they can and do perform BACS payments in branch. As their web page says (type in Bacs into the search on the lloyds bank front page....) it is free, takes 4 days and is available. Now, counter staff are not trained to perform this and will happily say that its CHAPS way or the highway, but, clued up managers will authorise this (and do - I've used it recently). I recommend pointing staff in the direction of their own web page. Contrary to what some junior staff will say, it is significantly cheaper to perform a BACS transfer than store 10 grand in branch on the off-chance that a customer requires it walking over the road to another bank.

Mind you, the FPS system was introduced because the OFT had criticised UK banks for relying on the tardy nature of the BACS system, but it still has its place.

Besides, waiting 30 minutes on a mobile to an 0845 number is not my idea of a 'money saving experience', especially when my branch has someone sitting there picking their fingernails, waiting for redundancy.

This is comical. Oh no they don't! When you type in BACS into the search page it asks the default question 'What is BACS?'. All you've done is paste the explanation of what a BACS transfer is. Find me something that specifically says you can make a BACS transfer in branch. Oh, you can't.

Don't you find it a bit of a coincidence that all the posters here who have been into several different branches have all found out the same thing? Do you think that there is some kind of conspiracy to have every transfer done via CHAPS? The branch staff don't give a stuff that you want to do a BACS payment, if they could do it they would. There are no targets for the number of CHAPS transfer branch staff have to do in a quarter!

I will repeat again for expet (troll material?) that you cannot initiate a BACS transfer over the counter at any LTSB branch.

I will gladly be proven wrong if you can prove the above statement is untrue.
Please tell us how 'clued up managers' authorise - what is the exact mechanics of it? or do you just mean you pay a bill with cash or cheque called a BGC?
    (Bank giro credit)

Bang on. You can use a giro slip to pay a bill, but cannot do a BACS payment, as mentioned by the above.

A 'clued up manager' would need to use a payment option that is physically not available in a branch, he could call telephone banking, but as could you.

Struggling with this one. I would have thought £30 was a reasonable price to pay for a guaranteed same day credit, given the amount of money involved. BACS does not have the same safeguards.

You can actually transfer up to £25k via faster payments.

Lloyds TSB had a daily limit of £10,000 for faster payments. When was that limit increased to £25,000?

They're sales assistants, remember that and it helps put banks into perspective.
