You would think the "senior person" would have the balls to state that and give the customer the opportunity to have his day in court.
I'd have loved to be in the public gallery for that!
I'm all for giving the customer the benefit of the doubt when there's a complaint, but it seems clear that the branch did exactly what they should have done in the circumstances. The "senior person" should have checked what the choices available were and then advised the customer that the other options were inappropriate for these circumstances.
As it is, the OP has wandered off with a free CHAPS payment that he now believes he has a right to in future. It undermines frontline staff and it's unfair to other customers who have to pay the going rate for the service.0 -
Did you not have the funds in an interest earning account at Lloyds in which case the extra interest earned between now and Friday would probably have offset the cost of sending the funds on Friday by Chaps?I think....0

I had to transfer money through chaps although i had 4 days to completion. The HSBC told me that anything above 10,000 goes by chaps and it is secure. But still it took more than 5 hours as there was a fraud check by hsbc chaps department.
Anyway another amount from Barclays savings had to be transfer through CHAPS as they said BACS is not secure.I did explain that other party don't need money today but still Barclay insisted that money need to be sent through CHAPS.I believe this fault lies in their training as bank want to make money at every single opportunity.
The certain commercial correspondent bank account can receive money only though CHAPS .This is the only are where CHAPS is mandatory.
I didn't complain to them but it is certainly not the right thing to push the CHAPS .0 -

There would have been absolutely no option to do anything but a CHAPS payment via an RBS or Natwest branch in this situation.0

Although possible I doubt it'd be something that the bank would actively promote.0 -

Just to note also a BACS payment is not guaranteed to hit the account in 3 working days. It would not surprise me that had the OP had managed to send it via BACS and it arrrived at the solicitors a day late then they would have kicked off with their bank and complained. The OP should pick their dummy up off the floor and stop spitting it out when they can't do things the way they want.0 -

Exactly, this is a money maker for the banks.
If I were you, I would take further action (if you still have the receipt of transaction)
Here is where you officially stand on BACS and CHAPS...
BACS is the electronic system that processes Direct Debits, direct credits and standing orders for UK banks. If you visit a branch or call Telephone Banking and ask to transfer funds to another person at another bank, BACS is the usual method used. There is no charge for this service. With the roll-out of Faster Payments, electronic payments of up to £10,000 and through Online Banking, Telephone Banking, branches or self-service Kiosks could be processed in under two hours.
There will be an initial period when some banks are still joining the Faster Payments scheme. Payments to these banks will continue to take three working days until they have joined and are fully participating. Payments made to some credit card or utility companies will be excluded from the Faster Payments scheme and may still take a minimum of three working days to arrive in the account. Payments over £10,000 will continue to take three working days. Please note that BACS transfers are subject to personal and branch limits.
CHAPS is a same-day UK electronic transfer (instructions must be received by 2pm on a working day). CHAPs payments are useful if you need to urgently send money to someone or when you buy a house and your solicitor needs to send money to the vendor. There is a charge of £30 for this service for Personal Banking customers.............
So the Senior bod at Lloyds phoned my branch to see if they had any branch limits...they said no. I had cleared and sufficient funds, i had full ID (driving license, passport, utility) and 3 day BACS would have been fine EVEN if it was a day later!
The front line Bank staff are very poorly trained so I blame the branch manager for that.
It sounds to me like there are some poorly trained bank staff posting on this thread too.
Fight for your rights for god sake and don't defend the banks to the last breath!!
I got my £30, I got my CHAPS done, I got compensation too. How many more millions of people have been ripped off in a similar situation??0
