Hi, I have been trying to freeze raw meat when taking advantage of offers, but when I defrost the meat it smells off even though it was frozen when still in date. Any advice what i might be doing wrong?

I usually take it out of the freezer the night before i want to use it, and put it in the fridge to defrost overnight.

My money saving mission isn't working if i keep throwing meat away.
    Hopeful optimistic.
  • That's sounds super-healthy:) putting me to shame

Jane - good that DD has confided in you and you can both address the issue ... good luck with this:T

Don't feel bad lol, I only had the pear because it needed using, i changed lunch to mature chedder, lettuce and a squidge of mayo on that mr w love yourself bread and a handful of heatwave tortilla doritos, was delicious. :)

Blew my £10 budget by £3.60 but need nothing else, as i have managed to get the cheese for the saturday macaroni, £3 for 2 packets of grated mature chedder, they had a bogof for £4.50 but i don't really need it, so fifnt want to be enticed, i also bought a big bag of doritos for £1 so £4 spent in sainsburys and then went to mr w, as the market stall was not out today to get some potatoes for the chowder, got a bunch of huge asparagus again, 2 packets of tender stem brocolli and 4 small maris potatoes £2.45 the asparagus alone was reduced from £3.85 to £1.45 god bless the money off the brocolli lol, resisted most bargains, brocolli will go well in my chilli noodle stir fry for tomorrow.

Sweetcorn chowder is on at the moment, started it late, so instead of putting it on low, i have put it on high, i will be having sweetcorn chowder topped with fine green beans and tortillas, the picture says tortillas only, but i am addeding the green beans lol.

I also went on my walk today, 3.8 miles walked yay me! i have decided that i am changing my route, getting a bit bored already and the hill is now not much of a challenge, there is another hill but it is a 2.4 mile walk just to get to it, i have decided tomorrow i am going to at least walk to the bottom of it, then everyday from there see how far i can get, cm509 might know it, its the hill from the ex ice rink going towards buelah hill.

I am loving this veggie week, it's great, might make cheese muffins tomorrow or thursday, that way i can bring some for my grandma and cousin 3 each, 6 for me lol, yummy!

Sometimes the plastic packaging/freezer bag can make the meat a bit smelly. I always give meat defosted from the freezer a good wash in cold running water. I have found - no pong then - cooked and eaten it with no problems.

I made some sweetcorn chowder to use up some vintage tinned sweetcorn from the cupboard, adding a finely chopped red pepper which added a nice touch of colour. Very tasty, it was. And cheap too - still got some portions in the freezer:)

Thanks for your reply, so it's usually the packaging that smells off, just want to be sure as the smell puts me off using it, as its a strong off smell.

Well if you have taken the meat out of the packaging - washed as I said - let your nose be the judge.

Am struggling to keep up with this thread when I'm not reading it during the day!

I thought the more bargains I bought, the more I'd save in the long term, and I did. But I would have saved more over the year if I had stopped buying and took a break. You do have to buy again sometime and I suppose if you buy bargains regularly then no need for a big spend all at once.
My problem now is I have quite a bit old stock and that's why I want to clear a freezer. Then I'll fill that one up again and start on the other freezer and then ditto.
I reckon a 4 drawer freezer will take approx 3 months to clear, probably because I unwrap food into bags to get more in. lol
So I tarted the year with 5 or 6 months stash in the freezers I suppose!!
Only about 4 1/2 months left now though. lol

    Lynsey

:T Defo worth taking a break from spending.

That is a LOT of food in stock still though
My self-imposed task in February is to see how long I can go without spending any money whatsoever on food, just eating/cooking with stuff in the cupboard or freezer (well, a two-drawer freezer section in my fridge-freezer), It started on Saturday, so two days and counting so far:)

Kirri, I like the idea of 'strange furry cake':p

    Seriously the cake was bad..
I tried to go with just using what I had but have given in and put in an order to supplement it as the food I had left, mainly beans, was getting boring.. :o
Kirri plantain is used a lot in Caribbean, African and south american.cooking, i usually have it fried in slices or boiled. Even though I walked a bit.last week I didn't go up hill much, going to go again tomorrow :)

Maybe I should try it.. incorporate something I've never tried before each month maybe.

Lipstick - that lentil stew sounded easy, may try that.

WP - I like the sound of your meal too, the lentil burgers/colcannon

MNR - glad you are enjoying Veggie Week :D I'm liking seeing everyone's meals this week for new ideas!

I've finally put in my Ocado order, bit higher than initially planned but should last me a while. Had a 20% off code, free delivery slot and also I've been adding in organic offers as they've come up each week and if you add them in the basket even when the offer runs out they stay in the basket at the same price, so can get offers over multiple months. Nervously added in one of their organic veg boxes as with the above discounts I've got it for £11 ish. They've had mixed reviews so hoping it's ok..

    Breakfast - banana
Lunch - fruit bread toast and jaffa cakes
Dinner - not done it yet but maybe fried egg, final large fried mushroom and hm oat bread toast.
  • Speaking of fruit bread sainsburys were doing their loaf for 81p It's now 89p cheeky gits!

Kirri try it,its like a banana in looks but you cant eat it raw, it's sweet, trust me Yummy, there is a south american pork dish I want to try that has it, lol not for you, or if you buy green plantain before it goes yellow, it is not sweet, still nice.

My god the sweetcorn chowder was good! Made it peppery and even though i used marg instead of butter and some of the waitrose 1% fat free milk, i don't think it made a blind bit of difference, I ate it quickly, beans and tortillas on top only added to the yumminess!

I cant wait to have the chowder for lunch tomorrow, the route I'm walking is 2.4 miles each way just.to get near the hill eeek, will make sure I have my music.

Found a receipe for a lemon sponge with glaze, will make that tomorrow, but i do need to get flour forgot I got rid of mine because of the weevils, need to take.the noodles out of the freezer for dinner, there is now space! Yay. I picked up a bean and cheese pasty for 29p then put it back, as i have herby pastry and 5 beans and now cheese, so i can make my own, going to freeze .2 portions of chowder.

That's an excellent thought:T; I might do the same. I bought some Quark last week, which I'd never tried before (still haven't used it but have lots of ideas in mind), but I can't resist foodstuffs named after sub-atomic particles:).
My god the sweetcorn chowder was good!
I knew it would be, and so simple (and cheap) to make.
Found a receipe for a lemon sponge with glaze, will make that tomorrow
That sounds nice:drool: All these baking-related comments and recipes are making me feel very guilty - I need to start baking again:think:. I used to, many years ago, including HM bread from scratch, but slowly got out of the habit ... so that can be my better-late-than-never New Year resolution.

Lunch yesterday and today was the usual HM sarnies/yoghurt (separately, though, not at the same time:)); tea yesterday was left-over mushroom pesto pasta, and today was tomato & lentil soup from the freezer to which I added some left-over rice to turn into more of a stew, plus whoopsie bread.

Hope everyone else is still enjoying Veggie Week Challenge
