  • Had to get some store-cupboard essentials that I'd run out of (pasta, lentils) plus fresh fruit and veg (oh, and a potato peeler!) so spent £16.71 today, but that's my recipe plan sorted out till after the weekend, plus I cashed in my Twos and Ones jar for £12.40, so actually didn't spend too much. :T

Now the Twos and Ones jar is empty, next job is to check down the back of the sofa for any money :rotfl:

I like the idea of the veggies on the thread being our coachs :T excellent idea canspendnomore.
If a Veggie Week does end up being the challenge, I'll try and think of some good recipes (I tend to have them in my head, rather than written down).:)

  • I'm sorry to say MNR I learnt about the arsenic from the Dietician when DS was diagnosed with a milk intolerance and refused to drink soya milk!

That is part of the reason he struggles to put weight on. Currently drinks oat milk but it lacks protein!

Edwardia it's my hubby that needs to lose the weight. He has no will power either and poor devil only has to look at anything fattening and puts on a 1lb!

Only us 3 veggies here, just me and the 2 boys, no daughters here!

I think low carb veggie recipes could challenge!
  • Right, just eaten a arsenic free Dinner, cod mornay, mash and seasoned 5 beans, the rest is tomorrow's Dinner.

Als googled the whole arsenic affair, I'm really sad, but I love rice, basmati is featured i. my meals 4 times a week normally, to know I am gulping down arsenic is sad, Edwardia do they do some kind of organic arsenic free rice? Really wish it was never mentioned tbh.

Evening all. Spent loads today! Mainly on the spoilt ds. Spent over £50!

Bought him a couple of skylanders, a scarf and a... onesie... much to the disgust of his dad. I might take the onesie back though as I'm not sure he'll get much use out of it.. bought would love to put ds in it, on Sunday when it's his dad's turn to have him. :rotfl:

Tea was the creamy salmon pasta that ds wolfed down. Spent about £5 on food.

Took ds to get his ears tested again, and it's looking likely that he'll have to have a hearing aid in, hopefully it'll be short term. My headache has gone btw.

I'm up for the £10 challenge, or however much it'll be. Count me out though for the veggie one.

Kirri - that's shocking re: those burgers. I guess that's a risk big supermarkets make when trying to drive down prices with suppliers. Sounds like you're er... on the ball... or ocd with those spreadsheets lol.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Hi all - this thread is moving really fast!

    jak - Hi and welcome!

Was working until 11.30 last night doing my report - took it in today and they thought it was fine, but they have rejigged all the figures so that is tomorrow sorted!!

Last night late on I was sorting out the fruit bowl and saw that I had about 10 apples which were on the turn so I chopped them and threw them in the slow cooker with a little sugar and put them on low overnight. This morning they were lovely! I think the Americans call it apple butter - it went really soft and quite dark and caramelised. Have stored it in the fridge and will have it on porridge.

I cooked some bacon which was dated for today and will micro it tomorrow with some tomatoes tomorrow. I still have more bacon to use up so will do bacon butties.

Zafiro - sorry about your blood pressure - are you on meds? I find that if I drink milk that helps my blood pressure - as does porridge. I had to get a home monitor because at the GP's it was always high but they thought it was white coat hypertension and to some extent it is - I still have to take meds though.

I have some pork mince to use up tomorrow - don't really know what to make with it - it is only about 200g - any ideas?

On the way home from work tonight I bought some kentucky chicken - I only had one drumstick and DD and her friend ate the rest - I haven't had it for ages and it wasn't nice!

I use a spreadsheet for my budget - I find it has really helped me get my spending down.

Last weekend I bought two small WW cookbooks and found that they didn't have the points values on the recipes. Instead it said inside that you had to ring WW for the points. I rang the number today and they said that you have to be a member for them to e-mail you a list of the points in each book!! I am a member online so they sent them to me but it is a bit sneaky really!!

    Found these

    http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FoodContaminantsAdulteration/Metals/ucm319948.htm

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/daniellegould/2012/10/11/whats-in-your-rice-a-lot-of-arsenic-says-consumer-reports/

Basically there were no max permitted levels for arsenic in rice in USA and rice grown in the southern states of USA seems to be most contaminated especially brown rice. The USDA is analysing thousands of samples.

    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/basmati-rice-contains-arsenic-usfda/1005431

India says basmati tested before export but as arsenic is in air, water and soil and rice good at absorbing stuff who knows how it gets contaminated and some of the Indian basmati rice products did contain arsenic.

If rice was grown in the UK I would say organic rice would be safe as the soil has to be tested but it's generally grown in poorer countries which may not have strict regulations.

As far as the US is concerned there was no max, only for water. The EU food regs are stricter than American ones so just because mostly American-grown rice is contaminated there doesn't mean we have the same prob here. The USA is the country of growth hormones in milk, irradiated veg, GM corn and soya and pink slime in meat - none of which is labelled.

I rummaged around on DEFRA's website and we have had The Arsenic in Food Regulations since 1959 and there's a specific guy at DEFRA who deals with making sure imported food meets them.

I don't think it's rice on it's own, but rice milk. Small amount for adults probably. I was concerned in case anyone was going to give it to their children.
  • Just read Edwardia's post and can see that it is rice too. I suppose the amount of milk that might be consumed would be much more than rice.

Although rice must be eaten daily in lots of poorer Asian countries so I'm guessing it's not an issue. The Dietician didn't tell me to give DS too much rice.

Having seen the news that is why I stopped eating meat in the first place when BSE rose it's head. There are not enough scruples around meat for me to take the chance. I'm not judging anyone that makes a different choice, however, just stating my own position.

I am an ex veggie (married meat eater 1995) and have been eating organic since March 2012 because we bought pork loin steaks in Tesco thinking they were plain 100% pork and they were 89% pork with 11% added water and three additives.. and I know I've said that before but it still bugs me. Goodness knows how I'd be feeling if I'd been eating Tesco burgers or Iceland quarterpounders. Been low carbing since 2010 too so I don't eat rice.

Still get really p'd off with supermarkets and manufacturers for putting carp in food or just being devious about labelling. If some supermarkets can sell own brand ordinary plain pork loin steaks and cottage cheese without the gunk they should all do it. If Kettle Chips can make crisps last in the bags without additives, why can't Walkers ?

just trying yay you .. husband said as long as he doesn't have to eat almonds, he'll eat veggie for a week :)

Veggies your challenge is to come up with recipes to handle Confirmed Meat Eaters, Fussy Kids, Low Carber and Non Almond Eater

    This could be fun..
