I'm eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge

My Sainsburys has rubbish reductions - apparantly the manager won't reduce anything down below 50% so it just gets thrown away every night. It makes me so mad to see the stuff being put in those huge plastic bag things.

Cheerfulness and Lynsey loads of people rave about the henry but I found it really hard to push it over the carpet - i think that my friend's may have been faulty as it is really old and she says it is rubbish too. It also had no tools with it so I couldn't do the stairs and down the sides of the settee. Have just done the house with the Vax for the second time and even though I had done it all about 6 hours ago and emptied the dust bin by the time I had done the second go over the dust bin was full again:o

I had my veggie cheese and it was nice and I have just gone in the freezer to look what I have in and found a Magnum lurking at the back on its own so i have just eaten it whilst watching Foyle's war!!

Edwardia - I don't like having stuff without rice and pasta and whilst I am not doing the whole low carb thing I am trying to eat lower carb. I have the hurrycurry with low carb wraps off the lowcarbmegastore site. They are quite expensive but I freeze them individually and have them only occasionally.

i found some pig cheek in the freezer and don't know how to cook it - will have a look on google now - no wonder I'm fat I never stop thinking about food!!!

Freezer shuffling again this evening
Get out bag of chicken drumsticks for Thursday dinner plus HM salmon quiche - ready for Friday's meal - so - I have room to put in two bits of cooked rump steak and a tub containing another dinner's worth of HM sausage pie! :) Can't see any head way at present.

Recovering Spendaholic - I think it depends a lot on the managers. The reductions used to be rubbish in ours as well and then suddenly we started getting really good ones. F and V and bread is often down to 35p or less by about 6.30pm and meat is below half by then too if there's anything left. It does seem the more they have that needs reducing the earlier they start:)
A few months ago I asked one of the cashiers I see a lot who is very friendly and she said they had got a new woman manger in who was also 'older' than the usual and she didn't want waste. I did think at the time that it wouldn't last but so far so good:)So we probably need to hope that Sainsbugs has changed its policies and will be employing more 'older' women in management posts.

I have a basic bread maker although folks on MSE swear by pannys. I made this loaf tonight - sunflower seed bread - cost 35p - will get 13 slices. I wrap it in a tea towel to cool over night and slice the next day. I portion up the slices and freeze apart from three that go in the fridge. I never buy bread - much prefer home made - like to know what is in my food. Sorry photo is not good.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Morning.
Pretty grey day here, hope it picks up!!
Out this afternoon and need to stock up on salad stuff, probably pop into Aldi for the Super 6 stuff (cucumber 39p and tomatoes 69p), need frozen peas also (forgot yesterday and NOT paying Sainsbury's prices). Pick up some potatoes also. Try and get the Linda Mc burgers from a massive Sainsbury's, should stock them and ready for veggie day tomorrow. I need to bake some bread buns, follow Florenceem and start baking.

Porridge for breakfast, hubby's off and having the rest of the beans on toast with a fried egg. Salad later and soup also once made (carrot and coriander).

Not using much freezer stuff and filled the gaps made last weekend, need to start using up some meat next week. I think I'll take a pork joint out for Saturday and Sunday.

blackandwhitebunny - I also think a lot of supermarkets reductions are based on the manager, my Morries is fantastic for bread and pies/pasties on a Saturday after 7.30pm.

  • We had burgers for supper last night so that's one small thing out of the freezer. Both of them are now rammed full:o I keep telling myself they're cheaper to run like that:D
Dinner tonight at MIL - roast lamb from yesterday's bargain spree.
I need to look very seriously at no more food buying for a while as it looks like the vet bill tomorrow will hit £200:eek: and we've already paid out £50 on Tuesday.
I'm beginning to think that children would have been cheaper.:rotfl:

    Turkey Soup:

Get great big vat (ok a stockpot should do it!) and put in the remains of the carcass of turkey (ours was a 6kg one). Cover with water and simmer it up for a good hour to make sure the bones come clean. Add garlic and worcester sauce to taste. Pick out all the bones and bits of knuckle and then blend it up. Then add all of the leftover veggies, potatoes, gravy, sausagemeat, stuffing after chopping them up nice and chunky. Heat through again and serve. Salt and pepper to taste.

So you get the lovely stock smooth with chunky veggies for a bit of bite. Serve with crusty bread for a proper dinner / lunch - nom nom.

hello everyone i need to join this challenge please, i have two freezers full of food to be used (small chest freezer is in fact being weighed down with a stack of plates as it would not quite close). i have a grocery budget for the year but still seem to overspend on food. i had an audit the other day and filled three pages, very embarressed to admit that when i was writing out a shopping list for next week it contained all of the things i have in the freezers. it needs to change for one thing they both need defrosting. i am having leftover noodle and veg stirfry from fridge for lunch, we are having gammon for tea & we are having chilli and rice tomorrow evening, chill will be from box in the freezer that i made last month, best wishes to everone.
