I'm eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge

Wow that is old!
Impressive to have kept something that long! :rotfl:0 -
Taken some homemade chilli and 2 baked potatoes out the freezer.
I've never frozen baked potatoes before but I made extra the other week, hope they're ok, have some rice on standby if they're rank!
Also taken some mince out and defrosting it to make bolognaise tomorrow. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
Thanks JB, you have a bloody good memory unless you did a search!Impressive to have kept something that long
Also white wine vinegar (BB Feb 2002), also unopened until a couple of weeks ago, but since vinegar in general is acidic it's self-preserving and doesn't go 'off' (so why have BB dates on them?), I opened it recently and started using it - it was fine:).'It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.'

In the store cupboard I've still got almond essence (best before March 1995), must've bought it for some reason but never used it so the bottle is still unopened - and I assume it still OK.

I'm making slow cooked mince with loads of veggies. The mince was from the freezer and all the veg was either home grown or in need of using up!
Once cooked (should be ready about 4.30ish) then I'll transfer it to a dish and cover it in a layer of potato, hotpot style and bake in the oven until crispy. There should be enough there for me and DH tonight and probably enough for 2 lunches as well (if not, DH can have for his lunch tomorrow).
OUT of freezer - mince
IN to freezer - nothing

I'd fail on that - oldest thing on my spreadsheet is 2011 I think!
I do have a couple of things older than that but date is unknown though can't think they are too old - but they are cornflour and red skinned peanuts. I have no use for cornflour (no idea why I bought it?) and although nuts do go rancid quite quick, the last time I used them they were ok - only ever use these in a hm satay sauce which I don't have that often.Jelly_Biactol wrote: »In the store cupboard I've still got almond essence (best before March 1995), must've bought it for some reason but never used it so the bottle is still unopened - and I assume it still OK.
18 years old  It might have lost it's smell?!
I was updating my spreadsheet again last night, I reckon when I've used the last few stragglers of products I won't be replacing, I will be down to about 100 basic dried foods/ingredients, including spices/condiments, baking stuff, pulses/dried wholefoods. Sounds a lot but it's not much at all when you see it in the cupboard.
I must have 10-20 things that I am struggling to use because I don't really fancy them but don't want to waste them..
Today:
Breakfast - hm toast and free jam
Lunch - ultimate use up meal - quesadillas - rolled out and cooked the last 2 hm tortillas, then in an oiled frying pan put them with a filling of allotment french beans, last of the cheddar grated, a spring onion, couple of tomatoes.
Dinner - no idea yet!0 -
Afternoon
Walking day with mum and we picked lb off Blackberries which will go in freezer.
Made 6 small Rhubarb and ginger crumbles(rhubarb from mums garden)
Dinner will be the Italian stuffed Courgettes
Oh wants Chips and curry sauce
He moaned no more courgette meals this week!
IN
2 Chopped Celeries(YS) and blackberries
OUT
Nowt as yet:-)Weight loss challenge 66lb to go /59lb's lost
Grocery Budget January £150/£175
Feb £150/0 -
Will need to have chilli tomorrow rather than today as we had a late lunch out courtesy of my lovely mum and dad so don't need a big dinner.
Found out I'm being made redundant after the fire at work but I think it may be a blessing in disguise. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

I'll open the bottle later tonight and report back
Instant hot chocolate mixes, on the other hand, usually contain powdered milk (or some type of dairy product) so they they do actually expire.
This is a good recipe if you decide to actually use it:

I have 3 jars of organic hot choc - about a year out of date.. not opened and smelt them yet but having smelt powdered milk out of date it's rank.
Still deciding on dinner - thinking a mexican tofu burger with pink fir potato wedges and sliced, roasted beetroot slices and griddled courgette.
G&B - Hope things improve soon...
WP - I'd give him beans instead and he'd have to lump it!
Just decided to make a batch of the almond biscuits myself as I had all the ingredients - my almond extract was bb 2010..0
