  • Having read the threads on here (now obsessed) I have never had the courage to challenge a supermarket over prices or tried to work the sustem but today I did!

I trotted off to Tesco Extra in Durham and got the following...

3 games on the 3 for 2 came to £35
loads of reduced fruit and veg
some bogofs and also some 3 for £2 deals

I then got very excited when I saw an out of date bogof on HP woodsmoke barbeque sauce so chucked 2 in my trolley.

Shopping came to £106.51, minus 25% off games then another £10 for the free game, minus the group savings and then I handed over £11 in coupons.

I paid £73.15. Off to cs to challenge the bogof on the sauce and they gave me dtd (I took csa to the shelf so they couldn't swipe the label as previously mentioned on here) and they paid me £2.70 to take both bottles away.

    Total paid for shopping £70.45

Thank you everyone for helping me achieve these savings :T

Yes everything is up in price by a lot
  • went to my local tesco extra today, wanted some of the Bratz dolls, which had been out of stock for about a week. They were back in stock, and had the yellow shelf edge bogof sticker. Got a doll and a jumping horse, went through the checkout, 25% toy discount came off but not the bogof, so off to the cs desk (or hell as I have now renamed it!).
The 2 "ladies" working the desk were as helpful as a case of the trots and just as pleasant. I took one to were the dolls were situated and she argued that the offer didnt include the horse - even though it was clearly written on the bogof lable that the jumping horse was part of the deal. I stood my ground, even though I was shaking inside as I am not a confrontational person, and asked to see a manager. I took him to the shelf and showed him the deal, he agreed I should have the deal as a bogof, victory thought me- yay!. Victory it was not... when I pointed out they had not gone through as a bogof I was offered them as a bogof, but with no dtd - this has to be wrong surely??? - the manager was called again and refused point blank to give me dtd even though he agreed the price I paid was wrong, he would not budge from giving me a bogof with no dtd.
I got the number for head office and the managers name, and I got a refund and didnt take the dolls.
Not sure what to do now - do I ring head office and plead my case?, do I threaten with trading standards?.
I am not merely looking for freebies, I had tried to get the dolls before I heard of the glitch on here, and I am not in any way generalizing Tesco staff, but the words rude, patronising, unhelpful and downright unpleasant apply in this case.
Its a matter of principal now, I was overcharged and tescos dtd policy was not enforced.
Any help and advice greatly appreciated please.

The problem is HO are unlikely to do anything as you don't have the dolls, I would advise anyone with a problem like this to keep the items while they speak to HO.

No as FloFlo rightly says you no longer have a leg to stand on... they have refunded you your money and therefore the issue is no longer there.

As any R&Rer would say never, ever let them refund you in these circumstances either phone HO from store using the phone at CS or ask them for the appropiate SEL or photograph it (camera phone) and leave with your receipt and the goods (therefore the o/c is stll valid) and take it up with HO...

In your case as the manager agreed the BOGOF didnt come off I would have asked him to confirm this in writing and also confirm that he refused to honour Tescos policy that is displayed on EVERY till and at CS.

(depends how much you want to raise your profile though)

I would also advise not taking a partial refund as that will be taken as having "settled" the matter in the store. On a couple of occasions where I have been point blank refused the Dtd (or R&R back in the day) but offered the difference, I have not accepted it and taken the goods and my receipt away.

I know the OP did take a full refund there and then but personally, I wouldn't give them the satisfaction, I'd return it to another store if I didn't want to keep it or pursue it further with HO.

  • daughter and I went into a local Tesco last night, I was not paying any attention to what she was buying, so the transaction was over before I got to put my oar in!
Various chocolates on the shelf £3.20 each I think, or 2 for a fiver (Terrys choc orange segments, toblerone segments, and a few others) Daughter bought choc orange and Toblerone.... Assistant manager came back to the shelf and checked on the offer, then took away the 2 for a fiver signs... my daughter then came and met me (i was at the cash machine outside) and told me what had happened, apparantley the till did not recognise the offer...
But they honoured the fiver deal for her, she paid and that was it...
I then laughingly said to the assistant manager, "that would have been double the difference then?"
    "Not any more" she replied.......

Can anyone clairify what the official policy is these days?

Bratz stylists £17.97.. on bogof yellow sel exp 26/12/07.. discount does not kick in.

Bratz Winter Time doll £12.97.. on bogof yellow sel exp. 26/12/07.. discount does not kick in.

There was no sel for Bratz jumping horse but bogof not working on that... Should think any Bratz on bogof will not kick in today till Sunday as the 25% is applied instead.

Found the above in 2 out of 3 stores I visited today & they struggled to do the dtd..

Just like to say thanks for the tip :D

Our local store had a sel bogof for the horseback, but all the other sel's were covered. Took 2 of the horses through the till (can you picture me pulling 2 horses through the checkout?:D) , it took £8.xx off for the 25% offer, but bogof didn't work. Went to cs desk and the girl refunded the full £33.98, so thanks again :j
