Just another suggestion... unless you have some reason to be still using XP Service Pack 2 I would update to Service Pack 3 to be as secure as possible.

I believe Microsoft ended support for Service Pack 2 last year. This means that Microsoft are not actively patching security issues uncovered in WindowsXP SP2 any more but you can be sure that the malware authors are actively targeting these SP2 vulnerabilities.

I don't know why Internet Explorer is coming up in results, maybe its from when I tried to open it when virus occurred. I cleared cookies when first virus was repaied, but they all reappeared!

    Looks like your good.

However if you get back to your normal usage and the problem re-emerges then either you got a rootkit or one of the websites you are using is serving up the malware.

If its a rootkit you are looking at something like combofix to remove but you will probably have to uninstall Norton before you try.

I haven't used Norton for a while but one of the reasons I stopped using it was that I found it was impossible to get it stop monitoring while you ran the likes of combofix

Ditch the Norton and return it to save some money, that sod from Comet told you a pack of lies about Microsoft Security Essentials to flog you that subscription. MSE is a perfectly good Antivirus solution and completely free.

I don't agree... the Comet guy apparently fixed the original problem for nothing his margin was whatever kickback he gets from Symantec... any other techie would have charged the price of the subscription anyway. In my experience Norton is a very good security product if a bit resource hungry.

By all means use the subscription till the end but have a think if you need to renew year after year.

Went for a job on Gumtree and was emailed with a link to a zipped Application Pack.

The "ApplicationForm" was an exe (executable file). Ran it but nothing was happening (wouldn't open in word etc). Emailed back to say could not open file and reply email was exactly the same as the first email received.

I HAVE SPYBOT, AVAST AND ZONE ALARM ON MY PC.

Avast did find it and put it in the vault, but even after cleared, was still getting a 3D login request from my banking site asking for all my details (obviously did not fill this in).

I noticed that this file was still on my computer and running at startup!

If anyone else has this problem, go to Start, Run, MSCONFIG, Start-up tab and untick the box for this file. (You can use CCleaner to remove completely from registry/start-up)

    Once this is done, restart, then you will be able to delete the file - found this saved in my temp folder;

    C: Documents and Settings/(your personal folder)/Local/Temporary Internet Files/Temporary Directory 1 for Application Form[1].zip

Just wanted to inform people, as I had repeatedly scanned my computer and computer said was all clear!

As I said before, it was my choice to buy an AV and I chose Nortons as it worked for me before on a pc. I won't go back to the MSE AV as it didn't pick up the 3 nasty viruses that caused me to go back to comet twice last weekend and another user on here also using MSE AV also had the same virus. I spoke to another techie guy who lives locally, but I could not get hold of at the weekend, and he said the guy was wrong to say it was not a real AV and to remove from pc, but the comet guy spent more than an hour both times on my laptop and didn't charge me, while the call out guy may well have.

Re your resource hungry coment Bogtrotter, I have had a norton pop up saying something about storage, but it disappears to quickly to know wether I need to do anything about it lol.

Thanks, but what is rootkit and combofix please? Also, if i need to run hijakthis again, is it a programme that does not store on the laptop as I can't find it lol.

Current Norton is very lightweight and not at all resource hungry. It still however has a bad rap from years ago when it used to be.

Can't be bothered to Google the link to prove it. ;)
