I was happily surfing online this aft'noon when my laptop beeped and then gave me multiple messages saying my computer was infected with all sorts of stuff and to install Vista Security 2012 for some some of money and all 29 viruses would be deleted. I've never heard of Vista Security 2012 and spent an hour trying to delete these messages, which also prevented any apps/software from opening. A call to the local techie guy and he wasn't answering so went to Comet and after an hour the guy removed 2 viruses he found. I don't know the names of these viruses but he also said Microsoft Security Essentials I was running was a fake antivirus and removed it from laptop. By my own choice i purchased nortons security as I have used nortons before and like it, but a problem, my dvd drive does not want to play, I have tried the nortons disk, a CD and dVD, none are registering or playing. The drive beeps when it closes, but that is it. Can I avoid lugging my laptop back to comet or can someone help please? I am now afraid when online that my private details are/have been stolen:(

Similar problem just posted, I would have a read and follow the instructions here to be sure:

maybe try a system restore?
ive had this issue every couple of years, a virus wouldnt allow me to access the internet to download any anti-virus!
try downloading avg, etc and use each one once, run full scan, then uninstall and move onto the next.
between 3 or 4 free online tools you will remove all traces of the problem, restart and hopefully be back to a clean system.Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

I haven't read your link yet, but I think the virus is now fully removed and a system restore was performed at comet. I bought a nortons disk but dvd drive not playing ball:(0

Im suprised a store would be happy to put their reputation on the line that a computer was cleaned properly without doing a full re-install.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

You could have got free advice here on how to remove it, or google bleeping computer, and the infection title.
I suggest a full scan with malwarebytes, and post a hijackthis log to make sure it has gone.
There is no guarantee norton will protect you in future from this or similar infections, they all struggle to keep up with this type of malware!!

Well shortly after I posted my laptop went mad again with the same vista security virus. As mentioned this place would have been my first port of call for help, but as I couldn't access anything on my laptop and don't have another laptop/desktop I went back to Comet today (tho late last night I managed to boot dvd in safe mode, but it still wouldn't go past the initial nortons start up and didn't scan) The man deleted another virus and installed Nortons Performance Pack, so here's hoping. I have noticed the links to malwarebytes and hijakthis (I think that's right?) on here, but am wary of using them, nortons also has malware protection and am afraid they may conflict. I'm really nervous of using the net now and of what info, if any may have been stolen.0

they won't conflict!!

Vista Security 2012 is actually a spyware program and the popup windows are meant to get you to think that you do have a virus and get you to download it. Once you have run it that is when it starts taking over your system.

It ran on its own, I couldn't stop it. Hope everything will be ok from now on. Every time I sign into something I am nervous. Concerned as I need to buy online too.0
