I have recently joined another forum and as a newbie - I was not allowed to make any post that had not been approved by a moderator before being posted on the board.
This should be implemented on MSE - ok so it means more work for moderators but it will stop the countless spammers and spiteful ones in their tracks. They won't want to go through the whole effort of having say maybe 10/15 posts pre-approved before being allowed to be unmoderated.

It would cause a lot of work and it wouldn't stop all the spam as much of it is now coming from bots0

completely impractical on a forum of this size i would think0

This is a free forum and work at that level would justify site ownership needing to charge. As much as I see the wisdom of your suggestion it wouldn't work in practice.0

yes, looking at it the other forum has only 700 memberslol....
pity as it would help!BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
Having just witnessed exactly why what I suggested needs to be implemented - please do consider it Martin!!
User who was offensive got ppr'd and then promptly just re-registered with another user name only one letter different from the previous ppr'd user name. Has since been ppr'd again after only 4 posts but if MSE took on board my suggestion in some form or another, it would stop the trolls from getting away with it!
They have probably registered under another name again (and I have my suspicions which one lol) but since the initial posts are unmoderated - they can get away with it.....
and I was right, third time they have returned after being ppr'dBSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
Cant see it happening really0

I know, but the same troll has just been back for the 4th time under a different new name and been ppr'd again! surely it would be better to moderate all newbies than not really be dealing with the problem.
ppr'ing doesn't solve the issue.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
I agree that something needs to be done to combat the ongoing situation with the spammer posting extremely offensive and insulting material.
I don't however think that this particular suggestion is feasible unfortunately due to the nature of the site.
Better to investigate the possibilities of tracking the person down in the matter described by board rules regarding users registering multiple accounts and posting offensive material.:cool:0 -

Believe me, whatever you've seen tonight is nothing compared to the lunacy we've witnessed in the Praise, Vents and Warnings forum in recent weeks involving the same person talking to themselves via six or seven different accounts and posting the most hideous bile directed at other posters, board guides and 'normal' members alike.:cool:0 -
I think the way round this is NOT to allow registration from anonymous ISP's like hotmail and so on. It takes less than five minutes to generate a new id.
Before you start screaming about privacy please read on...
NOBODY sees the email address that a member registers with. So registration from a properly recognised ISP means that the address is genuine and the member IS traceable. And is still anonymous to all other members and Forum Team.
There are times however, when a long standing member might want to ask for help in DFW but for privacy reasons NOT want to use their main user name. There would be nothing wrong NOW with allowing members to have more than one user name since they would ALL be registered to the same ISP.
Anybody who got themselves PPR'd would have to sign up with *another* properly recognised ISP to register - and that costs money. Few people, therefore, are going to to troll or make a nuisance of themselves.
