OMG seriously people, they are family or at the very least good friends offer them a goodwill payment of anywhere between £10 and £50 or take them out for a slap up meal/BBQ at home, or you could simply say "how much can I give you I would atleast like to cover the fuel costs". I know my parents wouldn't even expect anything for taking their grandchild to such an event but I know they would be seriously !!!!ed if I got a notepad, pen and calculator out and said, well its 45p per mile, which should cover fuel, depreciation and running costs and starting working all the maths out.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

The people concerned are the 2 sets of Grandparents and DS's Godmother, who is a close family friend. They are either retired, don't work or won't be at work due to term-time job. They offerred not only to help us out of a fix, but because me and hubby often help them out, especially running them somewhere eg hubby has taken friends to airport before.

So the reality is just returnng previous favours,

Nice meal out or similar return favour in the future.

Grandparents drive over to pick up DD2 from school once a week for us, a round trip for them of about 30 miles.

We offered them £10 in petrol money, which they refused to take.

I agree with you. There's no way I would start calculating it, or offer OTT petrol money (which IMO £45 is) cos they just wouldn't take it, but I know fuel prices have gone up a lot recently, so I want to offer something even if it's refused.

Pretty much but I'm aware it's quite a distance from our house 50 miles round trip, with the people helping forking out for petrol costs, when the roles are reversed as I said in an earlier post DH doesn't pay for private mileage in his company car so an airport run would just be a time cost, and if it was me helping someone out, it would be locally so negligible costs.

Let Google maps decide. Plan the return trip using google maps and it gives you a rough idea on what the petrol will cost.

Your friends are being generous and IMHO 40 p per mile would be fair. However your friends will have to watch out, as taking money could invalidate their insurance.

Sorry, got my legal head on.

Your friends should not profit, or else that gets into the realms of carriage of passengers for hire and reward, the car sharing rules that came in around 1980 define the amount your allowed to contribute to a journey. Quite frankly, if you pay them when they've got back safely - who will ever know ;)

I suggest you do flat petrol costs, allow about 40 miles per gallon and then give wine/chocs/garden plants as a top-up thank you.

My son is at a summer school in August for gifted children. It's 25 miles from where we live, so a round trip of 50 miles, 100 miles for both drop off and pick up. Friends & relatives have offerred to help us out taking DS there and picking him up as we were struggling to do so due to time constraints and our jobs. I don't expect any of them to fund the petrol cost themselves though, but I also don't know how much to offer. I know it depends on what they drive, how they drive etc, but just a rough idea?
The cars taking him there and back, 1 is a Zafira, 1 is a fiesta and the other I've forgotten but a small car, some fiat perhaps. :o

give your son a break..why do you want your son to be one of these nutty professors...... let him enjoy the summer instead of being coup up in a stuffy car and classroom..
the summer break is there for a reason ....did Einstein go to summer school
