You've got some good friends giving 2+ hrs a day up for free.
£20 is my vote for the cost without factoring in their time.

To answer some questions. It's 3 different sets of people offerring, hence the 3 different cars. They are likely to do 1 day each.

The people concerned are the 2 sets of Grandparents and DS's Godmother, who is a close family friend. They are either retired, don't work or won't be at work due to term-time job. They offerred not only to help us out of a fix, but because me and hubby often help them out, especially running them somewhere eg hubby has taken friends to airport before.

Re - how much we'd save by not doing it, I wouldn't know how to work that out. My car is an S reg 'old banger', that I would be keen on taking down the motorway, and DH has a company car and we don't pay for private mileage (just taxed on the benefit) so I'm not sure how we'd work out costs based on what it would cost us in fuel.

Is there something you're not getting?

You questioned the use of 3 cars for 2 trips and now the £20 I said?!

The OP said that one of 3 cars could be used.

Then I said that £15 would cover fuel, but to offer £20 (an extra fiver) to cover all costs. Not an extra £20 on top of the £15.

the ops post reads like they were using different cars and your post reads that you think £15 is for fuel and £20 for depreciation. read it yourself its below. nowhere did you say £20 was the total.

£15 will cover the fuel cost - £20 will cover the cost of depreciation, servicing, tyres etc.

I just wanted some idea of what to offer.

    Can I butt in please?
You could give them £20 but maybe when your little boy is home he could make them a sponge cake as a thank you from him? :)

When you choose an ammount and offer it for the first time have a look at the expression on their face and then you will know if you should offer more or less the next time :P

ha, ha.:D They definately won't take the £45 that some people think I should offer. They're not looking to make a profit out of their Grandchild/God-son. Just really proud of his acheivement and want to help. Or maybe that's the money-saving element of it, offer £45 in the sheer knowledge they will say 'don't be so daft' and refuse to take it?

I think £20 each, take a look at the expression on their faces then back it up with a bottle of wine/flowers and a thank-you card later in the week... tell then you forgot to give them it on the day... that way you can shell out for a really nice bottle of wine if they look a bit miffed, or just give them some flowers if they think it's too much!

If they refuse the money then you should make sure you pay for lunch next time you're out with them as a group.;)

  • 45p/mile is the rate that assumes you need to purchase a car for your job and accounts for depreciation etc. The "fair" rate for marginal use (that is for each extra mile you do, assuming insurance, tax, annual depreciation etc already covered0 is about 25p/mile.

So 100 miles, £25 or so. In a friends and family situation that equates to a £20 note in a card.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%
