So, which of these media reports is correct? Are they both correct?

If they made the announcement to honour the orders and then retracted it later then that could be very bad publicity for them.

Edit: Have received the email "25% offer" too. Hardly worth it for 3 items under £50 total.
  • I think that the Guardian may have jumped the gun with it's story and published it without knowing for sure the orders would be fulfilled.
The reuters article calls Hamleys Scrooge and says they refused to honour the orders - http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?storyid=2006-12-19T134149Z_01_L19765637_RTRUKOC_0_UK-BRITAIN-HAMLEYS.xml&type=domesticNews&WTmodLoc=UK-C3-More-6
I also wouldn't expect any prompt reply to emails back to them right now. They're probably quite inundated with complaints now.
What frustrates me, is that the things I'd ordered are no longer in stock, so I can't even reorder them with the new discount, so there's no chance of getting them from Hamleys at all. Not that they even deserve my business again.
  • Everyone has received the same code!!!

I think it's just being pointed out more that you aren't supposed to post codes in this part of the board, rather than the significance of the code posted :)

I got the same email as well, very disappointing. Even though the item I wanted is in stock, the price to start with is much higher than anywhere else, so even with the 25% off and the £4.99 postage I could probably find it cheaper elsewhere anyway.

I had a look on Saturday and couldn't find anything worth ordering - comparing prices of a couple of items the Hamleys prices were ridiculous, so a 60% discount was a bit misleading - eg: £14.99 at Hamleys for the 20Q game which is £7.99 elsewhere (or less with Firebox or IWOOT vouchers for example); Cranium Cadoo is £11.24 at amazon and woolworths - at Hamleys it's double that! (£21.99) RRP is only £14.99....

There were plenty of genuine bargains on the Hamleys site alright you just had to research a bit before choosing
  • A loophole in its website has reportedly caused a nightmare at Hamleys, after recipients of an online voucher discovered that it was possible to claim an accumulative 60% discount from the Hamleys online store. The thousands of customers who took advantage of the deal have left Hamleys warehouse sold out of many popular toys in the pre-Christmas week. Although the offer was terminated as soon as the mistake was realised, Hamleys has promised to honour all orders made as a result of the loophole.

So they announce thay will honour all orders in the press release and then once it goes to print a few hours later they cancel all orders
  • I think what is equally annoying for people is having some idiot at The Guardian imply in a national quality paper that Hamleys are honouring the deal when they are clearly not.

This then gets "fed" to other websites like the appointment above who "rewrite" the story like chinese whispers in a playground.

Hamleys will complete orders but only at the new 25% discount not at the 60% - but the Guardian article makes no mention of that - sloppy writing yet again. I never went for this offer but if I had I would be more annoyed at The Guardian than Hamleys !

They can take a running jump if they think i will reorder with only 25% off can find the items cheaper elsewhere. This is still going to cost Hamleys a fair bit in lost revinue, xmas week and no stock to sell on line, I am not cancelling my order but i am not forfilling it either so the stock wont get release back into inventory.
