  • I dont use anything with SLS's but finding stuff can be expense as I also have an allergy to some coconut derivatives (which seem to be in pretty much everything that doesn't contain SLS)

The best brands I have found so far are Dr Organics from H&B they do a full range from shampoo to toothpaste, but some do contain coconut but they label everything pretty clearly so its easy to find out.

Happy Hair shampoo and conditioners from Sainsburys or Boots are fab and reasonable.

Im guessing if she has eczema your careful with your washing powder anyway but this may be worth checking, I use the Surcare or Ecocover not cheap and to be honest not the best for cleaning but as I only ever tend to wear stuff once its fine, if I have anything really mucky I tend to wash it in a normal powder then do any extra rinse at the end.

Asda stock a baby range (which I cant remember the name of and I finished my last bottle a few days ago) which do a lovely bubble bath which is something I have had problems with as SLS are usually added to produce bubbles and for all the bath oils and milks in the world I would swap for a decent bubble bath!

Its a faff but this year it is my mission to also avoid sulphates in food and drinks as I fine certain stuff make me worse, there is a basic list here http://extoxnet.orst.edu/faqs/additive/sulf_tbl.htm although on a plus point you can now buy sulphate free red wine :T

I wish I would take my own advice!

Picardygirl just out of interest what make up does your daughter wear? I had the same problem and it took me 2 years to figure out what was causing it. Turns out it was MINERAL (supposed to be natural and good for your skin!) make up. It has Carmine and bismouth oxychloride in it which lots of people react to apparently. My skin would not always react instantly to it. Sometimes the effects would show up days after using it. Since I've stopped using it I've had no more problems.

She generally doesnt wear foundation ..... just clinique powder as a base most times ....... doesnt use a particular brand with any thing else though, normally whatever is on special offer, or she particularly likes ....... really wished i'd asked the hospital last week for a copy of the chemicals they done in patch testing to see what they actually tested for ....... but just since Friday without using a shampoo with parabens in her neck has started to go down .... coincidence or not i dont know, but its making her feel better :)

From now on, every product i buy in the house for general use we be without parabens (hadnt even heard of the word til friday last week).

She's going to shops lunchtime to take a look at "good things" brand ..... reasonably priced and has been recommended on here!

Sulphates is what upsets my skin, and another ingredient which i can't remember the name of now because i've used Liz Earle for 10+ years now i don't have to check ingredients on products anymore, but i do know her products are good an in fact if you go to her website each product has a full list of ingredients there.

i do hope you daughter gets sorted, i know how miserable it can make you.

Just thought i'd update this thread re my DD's skin ....... i have started another thread specifically about parabens as we have found out that she is allergic to parabens but ......

the dr she is under now at our local hospital said skin wont appear any clearer til she has elimininated parabens for about 6 weeks but couple of months later and her skin had improved slightly but not great .......

My dd has been reading various blogs over the internet and has read about a girl, who cut out dairy and eggs from her diet and her skin improved dramatically! So she has cut out diary and eggs as much as possible, and her skin has dramatically improved !!! Amazing results really ........ after a week of cutting the food out, she cooked herself an egg omlette to see if anything happened to check it wasnt a coincidence and within 4 hours of eating eggs her skin flarred up!

She hasnt cut out every part of dairy and eggs from her diet, ie she is still eating pasta and occasionally pizza (which has cheese) but she is now drinking rice milk/soya milk and butter substitutes and it is having an amazing effect on her skin!

She is back at hospital end of the month, and has just had a blood test to confirm whether that is the cause, but would thought would let others know what has helped her at the moment :)

Wow that is really interesting picardygirl. I don't have quite as much of a problem as your DD but have noticed my skin is not great lately. I'm trying to lose weight and have been eating 1-2 eggs nearly every morning. Might try cutting them out for a bit. Please do keep posting about how your DD gets on, it is really helpful!

I will let you know how she gets on after she's seen consultant at hospital ....... it just amazes me that eggs and dairy can cause skin reactions and we were completely unaware, but amazes me that the GP we must have seen 10 times before we were referred, kept saying its hair dye or make up ...... dont use it! Easier said than done for a self conscious 17 year old (then) ..... suppose thats a male GP for you..... the consultant at the hospital is a woman and so much more understanding!

Have now googled "eggs and skin reactions" and its plain to see that it can ...... we assumed it was a product, which products with parabens in made it worse! Suppose we should have realised it was something else sooner, as Liz Earl products didnt have any effect on her face and other similar products but now her face is completely clear (using all paraben free products though).
  • I can't advise on paraben free skincare, but I've just started using 'happy hair days' shampoo and conditioner - it is paraben free, but it also leaves my hair in better condition than anything I've tried before... its also on 2 for a fiver in sainsbury's at the moment

Years ago for DD eczema I tried high dose Vit. D from I-herb on recommendation from this site and one tablet a day did wonders. Passed on tip to friend whose son also suffered and it worked for him to. It's not instant but worked over a period of a couple of week to completely eradicate dry patches.
