The cheapest filleted white fish that ours have at the moment is coley; can't remember how much it is, but think it's somewhere around £7.50 a kilogramme.

I pay a smidge over £3 a pound, so that sounds about right.

We mostly buy mackerel and coley, but also get *good* salmon and natural smoked haddock from time to time. My fishmonger also finds some line caught sea trout every so often, and calls when when he gets it in. You've never seen a bloke hop on a bicycle so fast as when that call comes in!

I buy Sainsbury's basics white fish in a big bag from the freezers - think its Pollock.

    I think it's OK!

Joking aside - I am fortunate that we live near the coast and where fish are landed at Sunderland, it is possible to buy all sorts of fresh fish and shellfish - many are still alive - so very fresh.

I buy a stone of live crabs for around a tenner - great value although cooking and cleaning is a chore - but well worth the effort.

Right, that's it, I'm retiring to Sunderland!

I have often got good deals by getting my fish off the stalls on the market or at the fish mongers just before they close on a Saturday as they are closed Sunday, I just freeze it x

As a Newcastle supporter I cannot condone that - the best thing coming out of Sunderland are the aforementioned crabs and the A690!
    Only Joking.

    Durham is nice though!:)

Has anyone ever been to Billingsgate Market in East London? Open to trade and public. Good deals if you get there early apparently.

Is there any tricks im missing with regards to getting fish - at the moment I get it from the frozen section in Aldi's but can't help but think there is a cheaper option somewhere - perhaps an online fish monger?

Go to Iceland (the store!!) I buy the bags of 4 haddock (at the mo there is 5th free) and this costs £4. They are a really decent size unlike Mr A's bags of little broken bits. DS and I shared one last night topped with Jamie Olivers peri peri crust (49p in B& M) and Ainsley Harriot lemon and mint cous cous (2 packs for 69p in B&M)
Iceland are doing the same offer in cod but we prefer haddock so can't swear to sizes. PS You can see the fillets in the bag and therefore make an informed choice before buying.

Exactly. It's okay to catch it, kill it, and then waste it. But not for us to eat it.

Doesn't anyone buy their fish from a fishmonger?

Yes I do I have a smashing local wet fish shop and he is very reasonable. As fish is one of the foodstuffs that will more than likely rise in the next few months because of the fishermen not being allowed to catch more than their quota then if I see an offer I will get it for the freezer.I also live around half an hour from Whitstable which has a fantastic fish market where you can buy fish that were caught that day. When I have the room in my freezer i take myself off and stock up on the freshest fish you can buy from there.
