I was born on 17th December, a week before Xmas eve and I used to hate my birthday being so close to Xmas. I kinda still do but I think at 29 I should be more mature lol

I ALWAYS get joint presents, stuff wrapped in Xmas paper, joint cards (always Xmas cards), people forgetting cos they're so caught up on Xmas etc. I wouldn't necessarily mind joint presents if it was say a £20 present instead of two £10 presents, but it sucks when you get something that really should only be a single present. If you get me. Not meaning to sound ungrateful at all but it just seems as if people don't put as much effort into it as if my birthday was in June say.

What I hated most though was that I could never have a party/night out for my birthday as it's so close to Xmas and people have family/work parties etc. So I just don't bother to try anymore I always end up disappointed. Either people can't come or say they will and don't show cos something better turned up.

My d/s was born on Christmas Eve, he never gets joints presents, its not something i discussed with the family they just accept that its his birthday and so buy him separate presents. We always go out somewhere nice on his birthday which is lovely because usually Christmas eve was spent rushing around getting the last minute things done but now we are all done by 22nd/23rd. We are lucky enough to have a conservatory so we always decorate that room with banners and balloons. When he was younger we had a party either the weekend before or on the 22/23rd December so he has a lovely 3 days of party/birthday/christmas. One thing that is a nightmare is getting birthday cards around Christmas time but i have learned my lesson and buy them earlier on in the year. He will be 15 this Christmas and i do dred when he is going to be 18 because i dont know if he will be able to have a party anywhere other than at home if he wants one because i dont know if anywhere would do one on Christmas eve. I do feel a bit awful for him because he gets things all at once but now he is older he usually gets one big present for Christmas and then money for his birthday which he is more than happy to do so he can save it and spend it when he wants something during the year.

My brother's birthday is 9th December, so not so close as some. My parents always made a point of never putting any Christmas cards up until 16th December so my brother had a week of only his birthday cards being up.

They always put the Christmas tree up on his birthday though, but he used to love that especially if it was a school day as we'd come home to the house all decorated. It was like his birthday signalled the start of the Christmas season, but his birthday was definitely celebrated separately before Christmas got into full swing.

I still put my tree up on the 9th now, as it's become a sort of tradition :)

    Snap! (nearly) :o

DS1s birthday is Dec 3rd, but when so many people put the deccies up on Dec 1st, and the shops are full of Xmas stuff, its a challenge to make it special.

So in our house we have a special happy birthday banner which goes up - and stays up for the entire week of his birthday (we also do this for DS2's birthday in May, incidentally). No mention of Xmas is allowed until after Granny's birthday - Dec 13th. We generally put the decorations up the weekend following Grannys birthday - so the house only starts looking christmassy after about the 19th. Gives him a refuge from all the tinsel.;)

However you do need to plan ahead - I've generally got his presents all arranged by the time they go back to school in September. Bit OCD but I find its the only way to work it. Oh, and start a savings account for the birthday and xmas fund - it all helps.:D

    All the best

IME (mid Dec birthday) it gets better as you get older, because you're able to appreciate more expensive 'joint' presents.

I think it was also harder for my parents to resist expensive presents for the same reason.

Hi this sounds familiar!! DS was due on the 12th December and we considered what we would do if he was born on Christmas day. Luckily for us he arrived on his due date. However DD was due on the 2nd December and she decided to finally appear on the 12th December also!! For us we take them both for a day out on their birthday. We also celebrate their birthday and we won't put anything Christmas related up until a week after. My Mum is a December baby and hated sharing presents so we decided we wouldn't do this and will have two seprate events. As you can imagen December is an expensive month for us!!! Also our wedding Anniversary as well xxx

My daughter's birthday is Dec 29th. She's still a bit young to understand what birthdays are all about, but we're going to try and make sure that her birthday is her special day, and is completely separate from Christmas. On the plus side, her birthday will always be in the school holidays, so we'll always be able to take her out somewhere fun.

I think we're going to go down the route of giving the non-birthday child a small present on their sibling's birthday, so that they get a bit of fun then as well (my son's birthday is in May).

That's the same birthday as my youngest and his older brother was born in May!

For his 5th birthday, when he was in Reception, he had a party and we invited the whole class of 25, 18 confirmed that they would be going but only 8 actually turned up. Being inbetween Christmas and New Year everyone had forgotten, but we still had to pay for the 18. We've not had a party for him since but just made a really special non-Chirstmas day out of it.

He gets a present on his brothers birthday in May, but luckily there's enough of an age difference that his brother understands and doesn't expect one in December!

my cousin was born on Dec 15th and everyone always made the effort to make the day special for her! she got a birthday pressie and a christmas pressie. The only time she ever got them combined was if she wanted something really expensive and ASKED for it to be combined! i had a friend though whose birthday was christmas eve and she only ever got one pressie as they opened their gifts at midnight! I thought that was awful - but she said she got a pressie when on holiday in the summer! she was an only child though.
  • Our 4th was due on Christmas day but arrived a few days early. He's four now and last year was the only year he's really noticed other people have birthday and christmas at different times of the year but he has them in the same week.

We make a point of getting the christmas decorations up early so that it doesn't overwhelm his birthday, we still decorate for his birthday like we do for the other 4 kids, but it just mingles in with the christmas stuff.

We actually find his parties are really popular with people wanting to drop their kids in and dash out to use the 2 hours to get any last minute "can't do with the kids here" jobs done.

Christmas & birthday presents, when people ask should they just get him one big one we do tell them no we prefer to seperate it out but we understand if they only want to get one gift then can they please give it on his birthday as it's doubtful he'd notice not getting a christmas present from them but he would notice if he didn't get birthday presents from the same people his siblings get them from.

We don't do half birthdays otherwise the other kids would find a reason to celebrate twice too- two of them are close to St Patricks, one is close to halloween, another easter- they'd all have their reasons to get a second birthday if we gave him a second birthday.
