  • I overheard a mum in Tesco the other day telling her son that she would buy the toy for him but that it had to be sent to Father Christmas so he could bring it back on Christmas Eve. I was like, what on earth???

This happens in our house too but only as a compromise between my way and in-laws way - I tell them that
"Some people send their gifts to Santa to deliver (a bit like posting a letter) but some people like to give their gifts in person"
has worked so far although I can't believe that my DD1 (10) really truly still believes but I'm not about to rock the boat.

We sign most from mum and dad, a couple from eachother and a couple from Santa usually a selecton pack and small toy put into a stocking. My two kids (2 and 5) are too busy tearing off the wrapping paper to notice.

My children (16, 13 & 11 yrs) still love their stockings with little bits in. I wake them (yea, I know!) very early and we all climb into my bed and open them. I do one for me to, so we can all join in! (single parent, so noone to do it for me!)

We then go downsairs and do the main presents which Santa has never taken credit for as I work really hard to buy them lovely gifts.

We then have a dinner table gift!

    I love Christmas!

  • can i just ask how do your children thank family members for their gifts if they don't know who bought it for them. I would be really hurt if my nieces didn't thank me for my gifts as i work hard to pay for them.

  • I used to tell my children that I bought the presents and sent them to Father Christmas to decide if they had been good enough for them.

I sometimes wondered if that was right, but I didn't want my children to feel that they could have whatever they wanted. In retrospect I probably should have just had a stocking from Father Christmas, but we never had stockings when I was a kid - don't know why.

I also used to get asked all sorts of questions about all the Father Christmas' in the shops - I did try it was magic, but that didn't wash - so told them that he was so busy he had to have some helpers, these days.

Not as bad as at my son's playgroup christmas party when a little boys Grandpa dressed up as Santa to do the presents and the little boy pipes up -'Hello, grandpa'

Thankfully both my children now know that Father Christmas isn't real.
  • To be perfectly honest I can't remember what my parents did about presents from them. I only remember getting presents from Santa and other relatives but don't know if I ever asked about ones from them.

With my own children, they get their main present from Santa plus a couple small ones and their stocking and the rest are from us and the extended family. DH and I do a stocking for each other and that is from Santa but in the past we haven't had anything else from him. Not sure this year though as might be a giveaway if we don't all receive from Sanat as we are all getting very similar gifts i.e. ipods (refurbished ones - thanks to those on this site letting me know!). Haven't decided finally yet on that one ;)
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:
  • As children we used to get presents from both Santa & our parents. Even today my mum still address some presents as love santa and we do the same too!

I'm 32 and have never had a Christmas present off my Mum and Dad, everything has always been from Santa. Never thought to question it until now!

Snap! I'm 32 also and both mine and my brothers presents were from Santa (not Father Christmas - no idea who he is!). We didn't get stockings either and until we were older and volume of presents got small they were never wrapped. My parents also sat up till the early hours building anything that needed it so the playing would commence immediately (and things wouldn't get lost/broken in the chaos later). It never occurred to me that the presents were not from Mum and Dad as I thought stuff from Santa was on behalf of mum and dad.

In our house Santa brings the stocking and a couple of other presents. Everything else comes from Mummy and Daddy. The wrapping paper may be the same but Santa's labels are always Disney Princess ones so she can tell the difference. Which reminds me that I have forgotten to label one of DS's present from Santa. He hasn't believed for the last couple of years but DD noticed that although Daddy, her brother and her got stockings that mummy didn't, I managed to get around that one by telling her that I hadn't been good enough but she will notice if all her brothers presents are from Mummy and Daddy.
