In our house Father Christmas brings a Spud's stocking with various little bits & peices, this year it "might";) include a snowman cuddly toy, a bob the builder toy, a satsuma & a new toothbrush & toothpaste amongst other things. Mummy & Daddy put presents from them under the tree, these tend to be bigger presents & when he is old enough this will be where his "main" present comes from.

    HTH;)

  • I'm quite surprised that for some people Father Christmas brings all the presents. My understanding is that he fills stockings and that's it.

In my family FC fills stockings with unwrapped small gifts, then there are bigger/more expensive gifts from parents and other family members.

Our main present was always form Mum and Dad and other presents were from Santa. When we were young mum told us the real story of Saint Nicholas, and so we believed in the spirit of Santa. but of course as a little girl is till believed Santa came etc, but Mum told us that she and Dad had to give Santa money to buy presents for us so they couldn't afford it, we couldn't get it.

Now my mum is 64 and SHE still gets presents from Santa. It's just the way we do things, we get a couple of presents from MUm and 5 or 6 presents from Santa. And since my dad died, now I am Santa for my mum, so she gets presents form each child plus a pile of presents form Santa. We never spend more than about £50 on the Santa presents but it always means we have a lovely pile of presents to open.
  • I remember when I was younger asking mum ( who was a single mum, but tried her hardest ) why she never got us anything as it was all off father christmas. It must have really upset her thinking back to it. With my two children father christmas puts gifts in the stockings ( unwrapped ) and everything under the tree will be labeled as to who it's off ie mummy and daddy, off sister etc so they never ask me that dreaded question. Don't want father christmas getting all the credit do we?

When I was little my dad used to send my presents out to santa for delivery.

In our house, because father christmas has so many children to get for, he now makes 1 present for 1 child and we get the rest to help him along.

  • We do the same as whambamboo and lil_me - the stocking presents are from Father Christmas.

If anyone is interested the reason for the stockings is because the original Father Christmas, St Nicholas, left a bag of gold at a poor mans house. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings. The idea of the red FC suit also comes from St Nicholas as he was a Bishop and their formal attire was a red cloak. So, Father Christmas does exist ...........:xmassmile

  • Years ago before I became a parent, my SIL told the following tale which I have always remembered.
There were 2 little boys who were 6 years old and both still belived in Santa, both in her class at school, although not best friends. After christmas boy 1 was telling everyone how Santa had bought him a bike, tv and loads of other stuff. When boy 2 was asked what he had recived for christmas it was nowhere nears as much as boy 1. Boy 1 than said that boy 2 must be really naughty for Santa not to have bought him as much as he got. Boy 2 got really upset as his parents had made the mistake of letting him assume that Santa buys the presents. He could not understand why he too did not recieve a bike and a TV. He thought he must be really bad for santa to have not treated him the same. It took loads of explanations to sort it out.

We have always told our children when they belived, that mum and dad and releatives buy the presents and Santa just delivers them. That way we have not be blackmailed into buying the latest fad every year. Luckly for us, the cost of christmas has never been a worry, however I do know that its not the case for many people. My children still belived in Santa but they grew up realistic in the belief that it was mum and dad (And nowdays Tescos) that fund chirstmas.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Our 2 (4 1/2 and 2) have a stocking from Santa, a present under the tree from Santa and a present under the tree from us (as well as other gifts given by relatives). Grandma and Grandpa will have a small 'token' present from Santa this year as they are coming to ours for dinner. They write a Christmas list a month or so before hand (okay, so the elder one does it for the youngest) and they can put down as many 'ideas' as they have years i.e. 4 year old can put down 4 requests, if that makes sense. Made me laugh when my eldest asked if Santa would bring me 35 things this year!! I have told them that, when they are older, Mummy and Daddy will need to send money to Santa to help pay for the presents. They too have done Operation Christmas Child this year.

They are always very happy with their presents (Santa is very clever!), nothing has ever cost more than £7 (Thankyou, Adams for the autumn sale!!) and if a friend gets something big and amazing, then I say brilliant, when you go round there to play then I'm sure so-and-so will share it with you. They have a Christmas party (it was today, actually) and no-one brings presents but everyone brings a dish of food and then they play and make crackers, paper chains, etc.

I am fairly sure they are happy with their lot, the whole build up to Christmas, carols, Christingle, the tree, the chocs, family and neighbours coming over, etc., are probably more exciting to them than Santa bringing them huge presents. I also hope that, as they grow up, I have instilled in them an appreciation of the real meaning of Christmas, the fact that it is a family time and that presents are wonderful but that they're not the be all and end all ... fairly sure they will be fine until they are teenagers!
    That's Numberwang!
