I had a murderer move in next to me. Well he wasn't a murderer when he moved in, only when he decided to murder his wife (in the kitchen, then he dragged her into the bedroom and lay her on the bed where she stayed for several days). Why did no one consult me about this in advance?
    Gone ... or have I?

What do you call a lot? Your just using daily mail headlines to reinforce your own prejudice. Says a lot about you I'm afraid.

you suggest everyone on benefits are the salt of the earth? most people on benefits are decent people who have been unlucky. but we all know some benefit claimants are just workshy.

Im in HA house and on benefits at the moment but that will be changing.. im 100% keen on getting back into work..

our neighbours are a mix of HA tenants and owner occupiers ( theres 1 private rented house in the street) we all tend to get along (well theres on moany old git who hates practically everyone and rings the HA to complain about made up stuff).
i know a few workshy people who have been on the dole for ages but i dont judge thats up to them if they dont want to work to get better things and a better life for themselves..
my house isnt exactly a palace but having my own place is brilliant be it rented so what.. i cant really get a mortgage atm.. would love to own my own house eventually. I am happy where i am atm

I saw an interesting documentary on council housing a few weeks ago. It was really well put together and taught me a lot that I did not know.
For example - it was a tory govt that started a review into what can be done to help those who were at that time living in slums.
And a labour govt that removed the rule that in order to live in a council house you had to be working.

So back when they were introduced they were houses for the working class - i.e. those that were working!
Once that rule was removed the sense of pride that these owners had for their property was lost as the estates were taken over by the "scum" that are often referred to.
If everyone in social housing was working then i am sure that it would not affect the value of your home to have one next door. But they don't - so it does.

I have lived on 2 ex council estates now, both had the majority owners (95%) but the minority who were in social housing were the absolute filth that really ruin it for everyone else. For that reason I tried my hardest to get out of council estates as fast as possible. Otherwise I would still be there. Unfortunately on both estates the trouble families really ticked all the cliche boxes (loads of kids, roaming the streets, smashing up everyone elses gardens, parents don't work etc).
It's a real shame, my brother had to live in a HA property. Nearly the whole road was HA (new estate) and only one family were scum, but unfortunately it only takes one to run it for everyone.

So yes I can see the OP's point. Most who live in HA are good people, but the very vocal minority tar everyone with the same brush.

It was interesting to see Ed Millipede say that social housing waiting lists should favour the working today... Lets hope the tories steal that one too.

Added to the OP's implication that those who own their homes are somehow better than those who rent from a HA, in my previous HA property the family directly opposite were homeowners (well, had a mortgage anyway which they used to buy their HA house with at a huge discount - all wrong IMO but that's another argument for another day). They also had a criminal record (both husband and wife) and had 2 teenagers who never worked a day when they left school (nor went to college). Instead they would spend all day standing outside their house on the drive or pavement smoking, drinking and making an unholy racket. Their friends would turn up in cars, and do drag-race starts in the road (a cul-de-sac). They would think of nothing to still be outside messing about and shouting and screaming at 2am. This included the parents. They then defaulted on their mortgage and encouraged their daughter to get pregnant in order for the HA to rebuy their property and rent it back to them as they 'didn't want a scummy flat' which is all they would have been entitled to.

Better than me because they 'owned' their property? I don't think so.

Assuming that the OP is for real I wonder what he would make of my house.

Front garden is full of weeds, and has been for a number of years.

Sometimes I look at it and think wouldn't it be nice to get it sorted -most of the time though I don't even bother to look at it.

So OP what would you say if I lived next door to you?

  • Yeah, fabulous. Hard work = reward at the expense of everyone else. Capitalism's made a whole lot more people miserable than it's ever made happy.

Too true. Also a lot of people work hard and get sod all reward for it. Now the fat greedy capitalist have decided that why should they pay a person in England £17000 a year to work in a call centre when they can exploit someone in India and pay them £1700 a year instead.

Ever noticed that everything is Made In China nowdays. Why do you think that is. Labour is dirt cheap and if they moan about it then you just shoot them.

Capitalism does not work but the alternatives work less.
