see if it still slow with battery removed

it only reaches the end of it's life when it doesn't switch on

It's probably just got so much cr!p on it that it's struggling to cope. Before splashing out on a new laptop, invest about £20 on some new memory (usually available on eBay for most laptops) and give it a full software rebuild.
When you've reinstalled the operating system just reinstall the applications you actually use rather than the one you thought you might use 4 years ago but never have. Also worth investing in a cheap external drive to back your data up onto.
Your laptop is probably just struggling to cope with everything it's expected to do, because it's running a lot of stuff it doesn't need.

I have been through and removed a lot of the applications, my BIL did the same too to try and speed it up a bit. To be honest I can cope with it taking a while to start up, but it's the heat that I am not happy with - it's boiling hot as soon as it's been on for 15 mins..

There's not much on here that I would remove tbh.

instead of us speculating, post a hijackthis log and turn it upside down to see if it cools and post temps from siw before and after.

primary reason (assuming it hasn't got graphics chip design flaw or faulty battery) for a laptop getting hot is a process whacking up the the cpu utilisation, and/or inadequate ventilation underneath, or fan not spinning freely

if you go to Task Manger and Performance, how much available memory do you have? and have you ever defragged it?

Running slow and getting warm are often related, it's getting hot because it's overheating because it's working too hard. Extra memory and a clean build means it won't have to work too hard.
