OP may find the following link helpful or unhelpful:

It is however possible it is unreasonable to expect someone to take good care of an item like a magazine for a number of years.0 -

What an interesting link - well done Mobile.0

It is an interesting link but does not address what happens when something is lent and what is the Law of limitation in this case.0

I thought this would be the section.
It even specifies "books or records left with friends".
and
"Examples of when you don't have a contract with the owner include when friends have left books or DVDs at your home"
Which is exactly what this is.
"Selling uncollected or abandoned goods
If you are in possession of another person’s goods you can sell them if they remain uncollected, as long as:-- the original owner is responsible for collecting the goods. The goods cannot be sold if it is your responsibility to return them; and
- any money received from the sale is returned to the original owner or, if this is not possible, kept on account for them. The owner only loses their right to the money after six years; and
- you follow the correct procedure."
Even if the "lender" should have collected, the procedure is still there.0 -

Even if the old dear did find out the magazines were sold on ebay - she would have to prove that they were the same magazines, I doubt it ever would get that far but cannot see her spending endless amounts of cash on tracing the magazines to the buyer and proving they were hers before taking the op to court to recover the cash from the sale.
Best to say nowt in reply, admit to nothing and stick with 'they were returned to you within months' if pushed - if she chooses to pursue it she has a lot to prove:)0 -
Seems the opinion is to lie and nick the money, by at least two to one.
