charging for tap water

  • I dont know why some people assume that you are tight because you ask for tap water - tap water is what I drink wherever I go...so when I go out for a meal why should I order something else when it is what I enjoy drinking??? I often go to chinese buffets and sometimes have to pay and sometimes dont - but on the occasions that I do have to pay I dont mind as the water comes by the pint and only costs 50p and is a lot better for me than any other drink on the menu!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Perhaps bar/restaurant staff that feel irritated by serving tap water should go and work somewhere else where customer service is not as important..

It's all very fine saying that but isn't the definition of a 'customer' someone who actually spends money! Timmne said he wants to put these first.

    Welcome back Dave Brooker.

Do you really think theres only one person in the UK who questions why consumers seem to think they can have whatever they like for whatever price they like, even if that means paying nothing.

    I don't believe that

I know it is certainly true for a licensed premises as my best friend owns a pub however whether it applies to a restaurant which is unlicensed is a different matter.

Similarly, as an aside, it is against the law for a pub to serve a drink to an on-duty police officer - even non-alcoholic drinks.
  • That's true, when I worked in Spar we were told we weren't allowed to offer them even a cup of tea! In case it looked like we were bribing them

Had to laugh at a woman in a coffee shop the other day. Its a small one in a shopping center and the woman had just ordered and paid for a glass of tap water with her food (didnt hear the amount).

Then a member of shopping center staff rushed over and asked for a glass of water as a lady has collapsed downstairs. Staff instantly gave him some and he ran off.

The lady then asks why he was not charged as she has been. The staff explain that policy is to charge for tap water as it is all specially filtered to make it drinkable. She again asks why the staff member was not charged. The coffee shop staff explain that as a woman had collapsed it was an emergency situation.

The woman continued to argue that she had been hard done by and that the member of staff should have been charged!

The coffee shop member of staff ended up saying that she refused to argue on this any further and walked away.

I just couldnt believe that the woman actually thought she had an argument!

It's a member of staff. Why should the same rules apply? What a stupid woman, I suppose a firefighter should pay on the spot water rates before connecting to a hydrant.

  • I always order a drink of coke (paid for) and a tap water to go with my meal, i like to have the water after my meal as coke is very fizzy & sometime I need a headache pill or similar. Do I come across as a stingy penny pincher to the staff? Or just as a valued customer??!

went to chinese resturant yesterday and looked on the drinks menu hubby said he will have tap water no you wont they say they charge 50p is that illegal?

should have also asked for yesterdays left overs, FOC of course, that way you would have had a cheap/free meal

I mean why bother to go out and eat if you're gonna gripe about 50p!

must ask, did you leave a tip?

To me that seems ok, I've never been charged for a jug of tap water - however that's been asked for in addition to some (high profit) alcohol
