Funny enough my local Chinese buffet also charges for tap water...........£1!!!!!!

I always use bottled water, the tap water where i live smells horrible, i even use bottled water to make ice cubes and even my dogs will only drink bottled water.
I was in my local cafe last friday and ordered a bottle of water, it was chilled but it was also open when i received it, i must admit i thought that they had re-used an empty bottle and just filled it with tap water, but i was too afraid to ask.:o It's the first time i ever got a bottle that had already been opened, my mam said maybe the waitress just opened it for me.

According to your first paragraph you should have been able to smell whether it was tap water or not.
Re: the ice cubes thing. If I make ice cubes from tap water round here I get lots of white gritty bits in the bottom of the glass when the ice has melted. This is so off-putting I have taken to buying bags of ice from Tesco. Oh the shame.0 -
The regulations concerning the cleaniliness and quality of tap water are FAR more stringent than those applied to bottled water, so the chances of getting 'better water' when you pay over the odds for mineral water are very slim.
I have worked in several pubs and restaurants and have never felt annoyed at people asking for tap water - I myself prefer tap water to mineral, even if the cost was taken out of the equation and I agree that it is quite ridiculous to assume that anyone who orders tap water is a tight wad - what do you think I drink when I'm at home?!
And regarding ice cubes - the white gritty bits in the ice are just the stuff that would be dissolved in water direct from the tap and separate on boiling (limescale in the kettle) and freezing. It would be worse if you lived in a hard water area. You can avoid this by using pre-boiled water to make ice as this should already remove the 'hardness' before freezing. At least it would save you buying ice!0 -

I believe the only person who cannot be refused a glass of tap water is a pregnant woman0
