I'd make a complaint in writing. You may get a refund if you persue it. The telephone operators are completely useless.

I had a run in with Orange. Will not use them again. Terrible company to deal with.

Why not just ask your bank to refund the Direct Debits under the guarantee? I'm not too sure how far they can go back, but you would more than likely get some of the money back. The rest you would then be able to claim back from Orange, if you dont get any luck take them to small claims.

Contact your bank and ask them to reverse the direct debits.

Ok, so the OP hasn't followed the correct procedure.

But then not wanting to use the PAYG, I can see why the OP wouldn't have registered the sim or even bothered to do more than say oh look here's that PAYG sim I don't want to use and put it away in the draw.

I don't see why Orange need to keep the pay monthly contract going or the DD going, since notice has been given and surely you don't need a monthly DD set up to be on PAYG anyway surely.

All that should happen is the monthly contract is cancelled, no more payments for the monthly contract should be ask for and unless the PAYG sim is registered within a certain amount of time it basically expires.

Yes the OP should have noticed several payments to Orange and it is truly startling how many people missed months, sometimes years of monthly payments for different things. But I think Orange procedures here are ridiculous.

The OP should write, but in a more humble manner than complaining as I guess Orange haven't technically done anything wrong, but as the OP hasn't done anything with the phone number for several months, some gesture should be forthcoming.

    because the OP hasnt canceled
they have requested to change their account to a PAYG
so until that account becomes PAYG it is still active
The OP could have simply given notice and canceled, but they chose to change to PAYG
the steps to take are explained on the call at the time as to what to do when the sim arrives and that this is required to cancel the contract.
I know,I have done it a few times

Sound analysis and advice. The world of Utility companies seems to be almost cut-throat. Instead of playing "yah boo" here, we should be trying to help people to negotiate what can sometimes be a mine-field.

My advice would be when you want to cancel a contract with a utility company be very wary. They do not like losing customers and they are highly skilled at keeping customers. The "Mr Nice Guy" you speak to on the phone may make you some tempting offers. Agree to nothing until you have have had time to think carefully about things. If your guard slips and you appear to agree to anything; the next time you phone you will find Mr Nice Guy has vanished and in his place is some ebulliant lawyer type bloke telling you you agreed verbally to a contract and there is no way you are getting out of it.

It is easier for me to cope with because I am a pensioner and the govt have warned the utility companies not to use strong arm tactics with pensioners. But if it is wrong to employ sharp practices on pensioners why is it ok to do so to non-pensioners?

    oh god,here we go
    what small print?
it is explained clearly on the phone what is required when the OP chose to change to PAYG
Im sure they didnt bother to listen and again didnt bother to read the letter with the sim
they then didnt bother to check their bank

How do you know it was explained clearly to the OP unless you were on the other end of the line?

having done this multiple times at the end of Orange contracts, they always read the script on what happens and what is required

The only truly useful response here is the one about contacting your bank and asking them for the money back under the direct debit scheme.

Also, never try to cancel any contract by 'phone. It frequently doesn't work. Always put it in writing, and send by recorded delivery if you want to be as sure as possible of your ground if the cancellation doesn't get actioned correctly.

Same applies to your complaint: don't mess about with useless customer service people on the 'phone, write. And if you get nowhere with customer services, even after you've written, get the name of the CEO and write directly to him/her. As a last resort, get his/her home address from Companies House (it only costs a pound or two) and write to him/her there.

Just because someone reads you a load of complicated bull that you are not interested in that doesn't make it binding. Just ask the power companies who have been/are being prosecuted for doorstep mis-selling.

    complicated? its not complicated
the contract is canceled by the act of registering the sim
The OP chose to cancel by this method
they get told on the phone and then they get a letter with the SIM
what more? the Orange CEO comes round and does back rub while dialing the number to register the SIM?
