  • £106 from HSBC today too, £50 of that will clear the overdraft, enabling me to cross that off my debt list, along with the other debts and then add my Natwest loan to it, then focus on paying a lot of that off so that I can go to university virtually debt free. I have a plan and it's something that I'm working towards now!
  • An can use that other £50 to start matched betting, thus coming to the criteria of money for nothing!

Are you planning on going to university in 2007?

  • Indeed, but here's the thing:

I was going to go last year but I knew that I couldn't because of my debts, so I stupidly went for management and then went off the rails and was lumbered with an expensive car etc. Plus I'd left the uni thing too late for loan application etc etc.

So, I've decided to do it now, the loan is through, one we pay the car off, we will then sell it, I am hoping to get £3200 - £4000 for it. Plus the settlement figure for the car is £5100, but I rung them before and said I was struggling so I'm going to offer them £4k as a full and final payment. Either way I will be down on the deal, however the loan is at low rate of interest and can be overpaid without penalty.

So once I've sold the car, I'm planning to move some money into an ISA with Fd and reduce my overdraft limit too, I want to keep my banking with them because they are pretty good. I dont need an overdraft, I have a secondary account with Citibank that I will use for matched betting, but again I dont have an overdraft, I only spend what I have.

I will use the money to pay off my credit cards (both balances with Mint) and the Laptop HP, meaning I only have one payment of £102 a month to pay off, plus the 0% credit card of £400. However that is off the agenda as it's 0% for some time yet.

The HSBC overdraft will be cleared with the £106 reclamation charges and then I will have £50 to put into Citibank acct for matched betting.

By ensuring all this is completed now I will be able to move on with my life whilst actually having some money for a life but at the same time overpaying on my debts. Hopefully one of my day jobs will come off and I will work some nights in a secondary job such as bar staff or something, but taking time to enjoy myself too and ensure that I go to Uni with as little debt as possible.

I'm 22 this year, it's getting to a stage of now or never, lifes about enjoying yourself and doing what you want to do. I never enjoyed JS, just the comfort, the people and the crack, I owe it to myself to reliase my potential and to do something worthwhile, I dont want to get to 30, have kids and a mortgage and then realise that I should have done it when I was 22.

What have you applied to study? Don't forget to apply for grants and loans in March! If you'll be using them. Grants, are always worth looking at :)

I'm trying to clear mine before uni too

  • Cant apply till March?

    Maintenance loan of £ 2,265
Fee loan of up to £ 3,070 - subject to the cost of your course
HE Maintenance Grant of £ 2,659

Is what I got off the SLC website, I'm doing it all now so that I can concentrate fully on getting debts down, only will have one to pay off then :)

I'm lucky, but its high time I paid back some faith that people have put in me, an old teacher has agreed to write a personal statement for me, then it's full steam ahead! I need to put £15 into my current account tomorrow over counter so I can pay my UCAS fee!

Then it's graft for 8 months, and focus, and then its enjoyable focus time for a great job at the end of it. I'm going to do my GCSE Maths and Science again, I got 2 EE's at Science :( and D,D,D,E at GCSE Maths.

Sorting my life out, the more i think about it, the more im convinced that all this happened for a reason.

Yes , but WHAT are you going to study? Good luck with it. BUT........(and let me say that I am NOT the voice of doom honest!!) just remember that there are loads of very well qualified graduates out there that don't go into "a great job at the end of it" Yes you DO have a much better chance of getting a job but it is by no means a given. BUT.....I can honestly say that I loved my time particularly as an undergraduate(the post grad courses were FAR too much like hard work lol!). DH also had the time of his life. Incidently he has a first,(English ) was student of the year on his course, went on to do a MA, and(even though teaching was on our plan after three years or so) Couldn't get a job in the "outside world." You are young and have all the time in the world ENJOY IT! Yes its great to have plans, and to have something to aim for but PLEASE PLEASE just take the time to enjoy each thing you are doing. Take pride in your life NOW as well as your hoped for life in the future. S*!t sometimes happens, just enjoy everything as you are in danger of never "smelling the coffee" Life is short, its not a rehersal, enjoy as much as you can. NOW not just sometime in the future. As ever I REALLY do wish you well.
Blind as you run...aware you were staring at the sun.

And when no hope was left inside on that starry starry night.

    Hi,
I go away for a few days and come back to find everything going a lot better for you! Well done because it was you made it all happen.
Someone mentioned asking ASDA about a day job, which sounds like a good idea to me. Don't spread yourself too thinly, build up a bit at a time so you don't overface yourself.
All the best for the GCSEs - not the easiest of subjects in my book, but all this money saving has to have polished your Maths skills! Are you taking them this summer?

  • I've done them before, lol, I'm 21 now, but I have to have a C in Maths to do teaching, and its something I want to get done before I go to Uni, no biggie If I cant get it done though before I go, can study for it whilst im there.

Miggy, studying business / management / ICT, whatever I get accepted for, all interest me, then with the teaching plan in place. Not doing a degree for anything else other than to teach.

Yes, the Maths is the more important. I don't have it and still find that can (very occasionally) be a problem - although I'm a graduate.
Perhaps it might be an idea to look out for any voluntary work you could do with children or teenagers as a bonus towards the degree. The more experience, the better, but I stick by what I said before - don't take on too much too fast. You have time yet (wow, I fitted in a lot between 22 and 30 now I come to think of it!) Meanwhile go and have fun with the Murderous Maths website - I like the 'mindreading' game on there!
If I sound like somebody's Mum (sorry), it could be 'cos I am!
Anyway, best of luck with it all.
