for guys - it all depends on what kind of woman she is, some love goods, others value experiences. If your woman goes crazy about the gifts that you buy, invest more in a ring. If your woman goes crazy about the time you spend with her (like romantic getaways) - then she will pay more attention to the process of proposal.

I have few friends who would prefer an expensive ring and dinner at the restaurant (they value 'goods'). But there others who would be happy with almost any ring, as long as they like design, and wouldn't care how much money it cost. For them experience and lifetime memories are much more important.
