  • don767, you have posted about a charity that seems remarkably similar to the one that Ju1i3 reported. The website is dreadful: the bad English and lack of hard information are totally off-putting. I would never give to a charity like this one.

While the jury is still out on whether or not Everyone's Children's Trust is fraudulent, a relevant factor is that an easy way to make money is to pretend to be collecting "for children". I have heard that many pubs are targetted in this way. Because people who do this are now being challenged and asked for their registration number, they may register just to look good, and then they can collect Gift Aid from HMRC - some on behalf of imaginary donors with falsified addresses.

It does look bad when charities collect money but do not appear to use it for the intended purpose, but it is not fraudulent if they can make a good business case for doing this, saving for a big project for example. I doubt whether this lot could justify their expenditure.

HMRC perform Gift Aid audits and they would soon spot if any charities records were, emm, dodgy.

HMRC have a very small audit team, and cannot possibly visit every charity to perform their spot checks. They concentrate on charities with a large income. They do catch people:

This is getting off course a bit, but I wanted to make the point that ever since the current gift aid rules were introduced in April 2000, sham charities have been set up to take advantage of the "free money" . For every one caught, others may be slipping under the radar.

  • I regret that I don't have a lot of faith in government quangos to perform their statutory duties. Many are fine at collecting dues but far less rigorous when it comes to enforcing their own rules and regulations.

Have you seen their accounts 'userfun' ?

For the last year that I have access to in 2009 they made a loss of £47,208 which initself is not significant though I'm having trouble working how they have a debtors figure.

On an e-bay page purporting to represent them there is more detailed information

    http://donations.ebay.co.uk/charity/charity.jsp?NP_ID=33251
Location: Gants Hill, Essex ig2 6xh

The e-mail address appearing on the WHOIS information for the website registrant is also unusual.

  • HMRC have tightened up on their audits in last 18 months or so.

They generally audit the first claim from all charities (well, nearly all) and then a few random ones as well.

  • i joined this thread after looking up bougus charity on goggle but the pub landlord:beer: in me smells a rat this bloger has to much information about young ones trust to much detail to quick i only gave the name nothing else mabey you can tell me were the money we raised has gone made a loss pull the other one you know to much whats your job there ?
  • The information I have posted is all publically available to anyone with time on their hands and the ability to Google.

It's difficult to sensibly accuse me of being in league with them when I have said nothing in their defence. Particularly in this area, it is wisest to stick to facts.

I can make a simple check from a connection I have made, if I can get a reply.
