If your son wants to work in a sports environment, he will in all probability have to be reasonable at maths and science subjects. Sports qualifications involve biology, physiology and often biomechanics, which is why sports science degrees are usually BSc's. To get into Loughborough to do Sports Science - undoubtedly the top university in the country for sport studies - he will need at least 3 A's at A level, plus it is usually expected that he should be competing in his chosen event at somewhere near national level.

Of course there are other levels below Loughborough, but I wanted to indicate that some youngsters think that doing sport is an easy option, and just involves actually playing/participating. Unfortunately not! The participation level of most sports degrees is exceptionally low, mostly happening outside academic time.

I realise that this has been somewhat off-topic, but sometimes I think it helps to focus on the 'end product' rather than the immediate issue. If your son realises that to work in an environment he enjoys requires a particular subject that, at this time, seems miles away, it might give him an incentive to work a little harder at it.
