MSE News: Scottish Power to hike energy prices

Don't forget that SP would be breaking the law by charging an exit fee of £50 when they have put up their prices this much. The 1994 Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations is interpreted by the OFT to say under unfair terms - "Variation clauses giving the supplier the right to put up prices with no realistic right for the consumer to withdraw without penalty."0

No, but I expect it will be affected Sep 1st or Oct 1st before the cold spell0 -
i saw this and thought the others will follow, i think by the end of summer we can get a proper idea of what is being charged like for like, will have to do a proper comparison, being on prepayment means getting the dirty end of the stick anywayWho remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?0

davidhwdn, you can reject
you have the "right to cancel" clause in any contract. but to be honest, once one supplier shoots their prices up, wont be long till all do it
I'm wondering if it's compulsory to have a gas and electricity supplier at all if on the network.
Let's see now.
Calor gas bottles and a camping stove and just eat things that can be warmed up rather than oven cooked.
An exercise bicycle in the living room connected up to a small generator.
Maybe even as was posted on the water bill thread, connect a small generator to the water mains and leave your taps running (only works if not on a meter).
Use 12 volt leisure batteries and recharge them at work (or connect them up to a split charge relay in the car if you drive a lot).
Use wind up and/or battery radios/lamps.
If I knew how to run certain things (such as a computer) from 12 volt batteries (such as computer/monitor/printer/TV), I could recharge them at work or with the split charge relay in my van.
With a bit of practice, I reckon I could live without mains gas and electricity in my home. It would be a bit inconvenient and it would increase the cost of my work unit a bit but it could be done and I would save money.

I agree with the post saying the increase seems more like nearly 50% than 19%...
That's according to the OES12 prices for me in the 14 (Midlands) area:
Electric Up to 225kwh was 16.699p now 22.636p (up 36%)
Electric over 225kwh was 7.216p now11.197p (up 55%)
Gas up to 670kwh was 4.865p now 7.918p (up 63%)
Gas over 670kwh was 2.777p now 3.630p (up 31%)
Just based on the increase in the unit rates according to moneysupermarket. That's the first I've seen of the new OES12 rates for my region...
Based on those rates with discounts applied my annual cost is going from £646.83 to £950.24! Almost 47% increase...
Based on those costs the unifi capped NSC deal until November 2013 is less at £947.42??!
Surely that can't be right...has moneysupermarket got the OSE12 rates wrong?0 -

Probably not. I'm currently on OES12 and calculate over 42% increase based on my usage and region.
You can check the unit prices for yourself from the SP website."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I was wondering... do you think the media will actually mention it that those 10% and 19% price hikes are in fact much higher? I can't believe nobody noticed (apart from us here)!0

After much toing and froing on the comparison sites and looking at what Scottish Power were doing, I decided to go for the 2014 Platinum fix.
I did think about doing the online 14, but where I'm playing catch up on my direct debits, my direct debit amount really needed to stay the same, so there wasn't really any immediate benefit and then if there was another increase after the August one, I'd get stung for that.0
