Two days?! You can completely re-roof a mid-terrace in two days! And the cost for that is a grand from a reputable roofing company, with a reasonable re-use of existing materials.

If you're tricking householders into paying £800 to change 12 linear metres of soffits with materials costing £30 max then sure, I'll do the work.. so long as I can pocket the £750+ profit! When do we start?!

JJ Carter: does your guttering definitely need changing? If you change the soffits, could you refit the old guttering if it's in a reasonable state?

Either way, guttering is only £2-£3 a metre, and being in a mid-terrace, you've presumably got no bends or downpipes.

Perhaps you could identify the profile of the guttering and match it up with stock in your local builders' yard. At least then you can put a firm price on all the materials.. Here's guessing at £50 tops.

The work is a morning's job. Don't let them convince you otherwise. Obviously it's easier to use a scaffold tower - and every reputable workman should have one - but it's quite possible to do from ladders.

Again, no clue about anything whatsoever. You carry on in your dream world in Wale's and i'll carry on owning one of the most sucessful fascia, soffit and gutter companies in the Midlands which I started from scratch with countless full replacement jobs just like what the OP is talking about which has given me my house in a Little Aston postcode.

As well as being a member of the NFRC, PERC, Confederation of roofing contractors, Constructionline, Homepro, Fair Trades and FMB, i'm also a roofing consultant for AxA insurance where poorly fitted fascias, soffits and guttering have caused problems to homeowners houses.

But, hey everybody, Asbokid knows best :D

Charging many times the going rate for a simple job is scarcely anything to boast about, especially not on a money saving consumer website. To then brag how your overcharging has bought you a house in an exclusive suburb is frankly nauseating.
As well as being a member of the NFRC, PERC, Confederation of roofing contractors, Constructionline, Homepro, Fair Trades and FMB,
Those are all trade organisations. You paid to join them. Crucially, to gain membership, you did not have to demonstrate any competence nor indeed any level of honesty. Convicted fraudsters and half-wits are just as welcome as members, so long as they pay their subscriptions!
But, hey everybody, Asbokid knows best :D
You're the pikey rogue here, charging the equivalent of £130,000 a year for nailing shitty bits of plastic to period houses.

For a reputable and reasonable tradesman, the job of changing two soffits on a mid-terrace (total linear length of 12 metres) is around £100 worth of work. That comprises £50 for materials, and £50 for half a day's labour, or thereabouts.

Back to the OP.. please don't fall victim to these swindlers.

Price up the cost of the materials at your local builders merchant, and find a decent local tradesmen to carry out the work. Establish reputation by word of mouth.

Don't be bullied by disreputable twerps demanding hundreds of pounds to replace a piece of timber worth £20. These are the true Builders from Hell: the absolutely immoral vultures who target widowed and vulnerable old people, and swindle them out of their pensions.
