£80/m for soffit/guttering?

Been quoted £80 per linear metre for what should be a simple job in a mid-terrace (no downpipes) for removal and replacement of soffit and guttering and rejoining at both ends to neighbour's gutters.

Something about bird-proofing and eaves-protection in the kit they would fit.

TBH seemed high to me!

what is the soffit made of? softwood timber? measurements? and what is the type of guttering? cast iron? plastic?

how do the likely lads propose to gain the height to fix it? a couple of ladders, scaffold tower or full scaffolding?

Its 12m in total (6m front and back), they quote is for upvc and plastic guttering. Replacement of current wooden, not a cover over.

They didn't mention access, but there is easy access to front an rear of house.

NB the quote is from the same peeps who did my d/g, and they were quite competent

    crazy money.. 12m x £80 = £960... whew!

    look at the low cost of timber PSE - 144mm x 18mm @ £2.06 per metre [1]
it's probably another 30p a metre for tanellised treatment..

and the low cost of plastic guttering (squareline? roundline?)... @ 1.50 per metre [2]

add in a few gutter brackets, nails, primed and undercoated on the ground, gloss it in situ..

with a couple of lads working from ladders, it's a £100 job..

£960 is a tad high, Try and get them down to around £800.
Full replacement is hard to do and is for experienced installers. They are doing it properly with eaves trays and bird comb, they will strip back the first row of tiles to install thisand also re-align rafter feet if necessary.

Asbokid you have no idea what's envolved lol and don't quote nasty Wickes guttering

"hard to do" ?? "experienced installers" ?? Garbage!

well since JJ Carter lives in a mid-terrace what guttering he uses is determined by the profile of the existing guttering..

You would charge him £800??? Remind me to cross out your advert in the yellow pages, docmatt!

JJ Carter.. Take no notice of the industry stooges.. they back each other other, to keep the prices high..

It is a £100 job... we've paid less for much more difficult timberwork jobs. soffits and bargeboards all round and up to the ridge, both sides of a chimney, and we supplied the material..

That Wickes pricing gives you an indication of the minimal cost of PSE timber.. the Wickes site should also give you an idea of what PVC fascia boards would cost.. £2 a linear metre is the norm..

As you can see, the cost of materials for 12 linear metres of both fascia board and guttering is well under £100.

and it's a morning's work... only a con artist would expect £800-£900 for that.

Thanks, once the Appleby Horse Fair is finished, the travellers should be back in town and I'll get a 2nd quote from them, so I will. Some ridge tiles look loose too.

    What planet are you from?

How little do you expect people to earn?

Have you heard of the Construction Industry Working Rule Agreement rates of pay? For a NVQ3 (or equivalent) tradesman, this would be £10.62/hour minimum, plus travel allowance.

What about overheads? The van. Fuel. The ladders (if that's what you insist people have to work from  ). Scaffolding or access towers. PPE. Insurances. Disposal of waste and Landfill tax. Company overheads. Corporation Tax. Employer NI, pension contributions etc??

    What about the company's profit?

    What about VAT?

Then of course there is the 'working from ladders' bit....have you even HEARD of the Work At Height Regulations?

If you can do a full replacement job on a mid-terrace off ladders and do it in a morning then you can come and work for me. That means you can do two in a day. I'll pay you £200 a day

lol indeed it is my friend! :p
