Not surprised you're a bit brain boggled - all that red bull and beer.
The whole point of the rescue disks is that you boot the system off of them, and bypass the hard drive completely - so you have to restart the computer and hit F12 (or whatever key it says for the Boot Menu options), and select the CD Rom. You don't want to run Windows at all, as the rootkit (if it's still there) is loading before Windows and is in control, which is why it's difficult to remove or detect as it actively hides itself and other trojans.
The rescue disks allow you to bypass this and run a scan without the rootkit being active.
Hopefully you burnt them under Imgburn correctly0 -
ok..here goes....fingers crossed.....gulp

Lol okay good
Me too, got to bake a carrot cake to use up all these carrots haha.
Does the XP install disc say which service pack it is? If not, might be worth making an XP SP3 disk so you can repair the computer if you need to. Also will let you copy a clean version of atapi.sys without breaking anything!

Good luck, I'll be back on in the evening, but will check in a few hours.0 -

Not sure how you're trying to achieve this, but you really should be using nLite. The site is a bit sparse but the guides do work.
From the link, read Main, Requirements, Part 1 etc, it's not *that* obvious if you're new to it.
Apologies if you've already sussed it.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
hiya spud,
thanks
I did use nlite..followed instructions on link but when it came to the bit where you merge (?right phrasing) the sp3 download to the source files...nlite said that there was already "hotfixes" and the streamlining may not work properly. I seemed to somehow get past that (tho no idea how:o) but then it didn't go one to ask me about making an .iso file/cd...I got a screen saying successfully and "finish"
so I managed the first bit but not the second...no idea what/where I went wrong. not tried it again yet as too tired but will try it tmrw morning and hoping dr web will be finished by then lol...it's still at 97% and has been since about 2pm
