    it says

windows cannot open this file "firefox". to open it windows needs to know what programe created it. windows can go online and look it up automatically or manually select from a list on your computer

    I tried to open firefox.

when trying to open add/remove programs it says this same but with "rundll32.exe"

What are you using to write on here?

You might have to fix the registry entry for programs - looks like SAS broke it from the log. Download this and unzip the file:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

Then copy it over to the affected computer, and Right click on it and select 'Merge'.

    ok that's done..now what?

Okay great :) You're better with computers than you think, as a lot of people would need more help with that part!

Okay, step by step what I think you should do. The order isn't incredibly important:

    1. Uninstall the following using Add/Remove:
    • "Search Guard Plus"
    • "Search Settings", and/or anything like "Vendio"
    • Ask Toolbar
    • Spybot: Search and Destroy (easiest way to get rid of the teatimer/sdhelper bits)

    2. Run TDSSkiller and clean anything it finds, just tell me the result don't post a log: http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe
    3. Run aswMBR and follow the guide on the webpage, just tell me if it explicitly says there's a rootkit, http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm
    4. Run HitmanPro, and clean anything it finds. Don't install, just do a scan: http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro. Tell me if it finds anything 'interesting', e.g. trojans, rootkits, worms, etc. Don't worry about cookies
    5. Wipe the restore points as in post #5 if you haven't already.

I'll write some steps to do in Hijackthis as well, but I'll let you catch up!

    ok...search settings uninstalled successfully.

I have searchguardplus and searchguardplus updater, both of which wont uninstall due to error...says it may have already been uninstalled..would I like to remove it from the add/remove programs list...yes or no?
